30 Scenarios in 30 Days: Russell Wilson will start all 17 Steelers games in 2024

The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for the 2024 regular season, but before the real games begin, the team has to head to training camp back at Saint Vincent College in order to fine tune their skills. As we here at SCN prepare you for the start of camp, we give you a series called “30 Scenarios in 30 Days” which gives you a Steelers scenario every day leading up to the start of camp.

It is simple how it works. We provide you the scenario, reasons why it will or won’t happen, and then our prediction for what we think will take place.

Let’s get to the scenario…

Scenario: Russell Wilson will start all 17 Steelers games in 2024

Why it will happen: Russell Wilson has been extremely durable throughout his career, both in Seattle and Denver, and while he didn’t finish the season last year in Denver it wasn’t due to injury. After falling out of favor with Sean Payton, Wilson was designated to the sideline. Injuries can happen, but if Wilson’s career is the measuring stick, he is likely to be healthy for the entire season compared to the alternative.

The only other reason Wilson wouldn’t play all 17 games would be the fact he isn’t playing well. This is where the Broncos fans chime in and talk about his lack of throwing over the middle of the field, taking too many sacks and not being able to orchestrate basic plays at the position. If Wilson plays poorly enough, and we’re talking 2023 Mitch Trubisky level bad, then there is a chance he gets benched. But Mike Tomlin has proven he is willing to stick with a quarterback more so than benching him.

Why it won’t happen: The fact of the matter is Russell Wilson isn’t getting any younger, and at age 35 he could be more prone to injury than any other time in his career. This doesn’t mean it is a certainty to happen, but absolutely increases the chances of him missing games.

When it comes to the scenario, it is just Wilson starting all 17 games. In a perfect world, the Steelers could potentially be in the playoffs and locked up their position prior to Week 18. If that’s the case, and Wilson has led the Steelers the entire season, it could be Justin Fields at quarterback the final week, and that would mean this scenario is dead in the water.

Prediction: As much as I’d love to say the Steelers have locked up a playoff spot, I don’t necessarily see that happening. However, I feel the Steelers style on offense this year will be conducive to keeping the quarterback healthy. Therefore, I believe Wilson will stay healthy, be productive, and will start all 17 games for the Steelers in 2024. Don’t get it wrong, if this does happen doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll get a second contract with the team.
