Let’s dive into today’s prospect breakdown!
Taylor Elgersma | QB | Laurier
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 213 lbs
Draft Projection: Day 3
Notable Accomplishment: 2024 Hec Crighton Award Winner
Pros: Elgersma is one of the more unknown, yet intriguing, prospects in this class. At 6’4″, 213 pounds, Elgersma possesses ideal size for a pocket passer, and his arm strength is amongst the best in this year’s draft class. I also came away impressed with his ability to sense pressure and maneuver within the pocket to spare time and find the open receiver. He has proven his ability to make off-platform throws, displaying a knack for delivering an accurate ball at multiple different arm angles. While competition was certainly compromised in many facets, Elgersma consistently produced against what was primarily subpar competition. He could not control the level of talent he faced, and I do not believe it is fair to dismiss his success simply because of poor competition. Coming from Canadian football, which involves more pre-snap movement than our American version, has exposed his ability to read defenses at a high level as well. As a bonus, Elgersma is a tough runner who doesn’t shy away from contact and can scamper for a first down if not contained.
Cons: For every intriguing trait, there is at least one more risks with Elgersma. While I do not believe his lack of competition should dismiss him from draft consideration, it is certainly a valid point of concern. The transition from Canadian football to the NFL could also be a higher hurdle than most prospects have to jump when entering the league. Elgersma was an accurate deep ball passer in college, but many of his chunk plays came on busted coverages with receivers running wide open. Becoming more subtle on zone reads will be another area of emphasis as he enters the league.
Overview: Elgersma is not an elite athlete, but he possesses enough athleticism to keep defenses on edge and prevent them from committing fully to the blitz. His smarts, frame, and arm strength are all sufficient for a starting-level quarterback in the NFL, but any quarterback coming from a situation like his will face an uphill battle. His performance at the Senior Bowl will likely make or break his draft stock. My NFL comps for him is not based on size or even predicted success, but merely on raw strengths, weaknesses, and mindsets.
