Let’s dive into today’s prospect breakdown!
Kurtis Rourke
Height: 6’5″
Weight: 223 lbs
Draft Projection: Early Day 3
Notable Accomplishment: 2022 MAC Offensive Player of the Year
Pros: The sixth-year senior from Canada made plenty of noise as the leader of this historical Hoosiers team, and he is certainly looking more and more like a player who could receive strong consideration from NFL teams. At 6’5″, 223 pounds, Rourke possesses ideal NFL size, while also displaying a quick release and great accuracy to the short and intermediate levels of the field. A transfer from Ohio, Rourke is one of the most experienced quarterbacks in this draft and has seen success at two different schools, and it is a big reason why he is more mature than many prospects in this class. His football intelligence and ability to read the entire field stick out in a poor quarterback class, and it could potentially be the key to him getting an opportunity to be a fill-in starter for an NFL team one day. While his traits are certainly intriguing, I would say the most fascinating part of his game is his toughness. Recently, Rourke’s agent said he played the 2024 season with a torn ACL. Rarely ever do you hear of a player willing to play with an injury as significant as a torn ACL, but with Rourke, everything begins and ends with a team-first mentality.
Cons: Rourke is not as effective when the pocket breaks down and is forced to improvise. He is very much a by-the-script player who relies heavily on timing and precision, and he gets himself into trouble when he tries to create something out of nothing. A sitting duck in the pocket, Rourke is not the most athletic quarterback. He has enough athleticism to pick up a first down if there is room in front of him, but he definitely prefers to remain inside the pocket and make throws from there. When the pocket breaks down and he is forced to make a throw on the run, his accuracy significantly dips. He may have already peaked athletically as well, which greatly limits his ceiling.
Overview: Rourke is an ideal mid-round option for a team in need of a stable backup, but the chances of him developing into a high-level starter are not high, to say the least. Nonetheless, his leadership skills, accuracy, high IQ, and team-first mentality will appeal to NFL coaches and scouts.
