2 players mentioned by Mike Tomlin following Saturday’s training camp practice

The Pittsburgh Steelers took to the practice field again at St. Vincent College for training camp on Saturday afternoon after a short weather delay. Following practice, head coach Mike Tomlin briefly addressed the media about their day on the field. Since he was only asked about a few players, I am going to continue the players mentioned and will do my best to dress it up a little. Remember these are players where a specific question was asked during the Q&A period. I’ll also include a quote about a specific group of players even though there was not someone discussed by name.

Van Jefferson

Coach Tomlin was asked about Van Jefferson’s impact to the wide receiver group.

“He’s just a steady, solid, veteran. He knows what he’s doing, it’sobvious. He’s got a really high floor in that he is extremely consistent every day. He’s bringing some leadership skills based on his experience to the group as well, and that’s appreciated.”

Minkah Fitzpatrick

After conflicting reports of whether or not Minkah Fitzpatrick was participating in practice or not over the last several days, coach Tomlin was asked about Fitzpatrick’s participation.

“He’s practiced every day. He did seven-on-seven today, he did individual last night. We are just minimizing him in an effort to see others.”

Rookies

Although he was not asked about a specific player, nor did he bring up anyone by name, Coach Tomlin was asked about his evaluation of the rookie players so far in training camp.

“They’ve got a lot of growth in front of them. The thing I like about the group – individually and collectively – is they’re not intimidated in their competitors, and that’s a great place to start. There’s a lot of learning and development that goes on here, and a lot of it is just them adjusting to the professional environment. Taking new coaching, learning from veteran players – and so the learning curve – they make that up quick. But, a component of that is them being confident in themselves and being competitors. That’s a component of it that I like from them.”
