10 players mentioned by Mike Tomlin following Tuesday’s practice

The Pittsburgh Steelers took to the practice field for the first time at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Tuesday. Following practice, even though training camp is over, head coach Mike Tomlin briefly addressed the media about their day on the field. Since he was asked about a few players, I am going to continue the players mentioned article. Remember these are players where a specific question was asked during the Q&A period.

Note: I was unable to find a full video of Coach Tomlin’s time with the media, so the exact questions are based on notes from the Steelers official transcript.

Nate Herbig

Coach Tomlin was asked about losing Nate Herbig for the season.

“We never got started. So, team development is team development, and attrition is a component of it. It sucks for Herbig, obviously, but I don’t know that we assess it in that way.”

Mason McCormick & Spencer Anderson

Coach Tomlin was asked about what he has seen from Mason McCormick. In his answer, he also mentioned Spencer Anderson.

“He’s a guy that’s versatile, but we’ve got a lot of guys that are versatile. Spencer [Anderson] is versatile, as well. He’s done some of that in the past, and so we feel really comfortable about our multi-positional flexibility there.”

Zach Frazier

Coach Tomlin was asked what has impressed him about Zach Frazier.

“Really, I don’t know that any of it has been surprising. Just the close proximity to Morgantown and the relationships that we have there, he is as advertised. He’s mature beyond his football years. He’s highly competitive, he’s got really good leverage. Obviously, there’s a lot of growth ahead of him, but he’s got a little time to do it, and so we’ll just keep working day by day.”

Russell Wilson & Justin Fields

Coach Tomlin was asked how much he anticipates seeing Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in the Steelers final preseason game.

“I’ll talk to you guys Thursday after practice when we get into that. We’re still very much in the ‘here’ and ‘now.’ We’ll make some of those judgments in the 11th hour in the preseason.”

Broderick Jones

Coach Tomlin was asked how Broderick Jones responded to seeing the film from Saturday night’s game.

“I think the next performance is an indication of that. It’s a process, in terms of getting better. You play, you evaluate and you analyze, you acknowledge, you make another plan to get ready for the next opportunity. But, ultimately, responses are gauged by the next performance.”

In a follow-up question, Coach Tomlin was asked if the brace on Jones’ elbow has been affecting him at all.

“We’re not looking for excuses.”

Jaylen Warren

Coach Tomlin was asked about the status of Jaylen Warren’s hamstring injury.

“He’s out. Probably out for this week, but not anything that’s a long-term concern.”

Beanie Bishop Jr.

Coach Tomlin was asked about injuries at the nickel cornerback position and he mentioned Beanie Bishop in his response.

“Much like the center position, we’ve got some guys with some flexibility, and so it lessens that concern. I’m really just more focused on the guys that are available to us this week. It’s a big week for Beanie [Bishop Jr.], obviously, missing the last performance, and so we’ll just keep working.”

Cam Johnston

Coach Tomlin was asked about progress made in punt coverage and in his response he mentioned Cam Johnston.

“I like the progress of it. I thought we took a step between game one and game two. It’ll be interesting to see what the next one looks like. We’ve got a lot of viable guys battling for position, and I just respect that component of it. Really excited about this opportunity from that respect. I know we’re getting some quality punting from Cam [Johnston], and so it’s a blessing and a curse. We’ve got to get down there and cover them.”
