Stars Pick Up Huge Win Over Division Leading Jets
Mason Marchment has been on fire lately for the Dallas Stars. In the two games since Thanksgiving, Marchment has tallied four points with three goals and one assist.
Perhaps his biggest goal of the season came on Sunday afternoon late in the third period to lead Dallas to victory.
With the Stars tied at one with the first-place Winnipeg Jets, Marchment fired a 360 backhand past Connor Hellebuyck to give the Stars a 2-1.
“He [Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey] kind of caught up to me there at the end, and I just tried to protect it as long as I could and get a good shot off. Luckily it went in,” Marchment said. “I was trying to go [top corner] but sometimes it doesn’t work like that. Happy it did
Dallas would go on to shut down the Jets for most of the night claiming a huge 3-1 victory on home ice.
The Jets got on the board instantly in this one as their first shot was deflected past Jake Oettinger and into the back of the net.
However, after that point, the Stars would shut down the Jets the rest of the night led by Jake Oettinger who made 26 saves.
“They’ve been the best team in the League so far this year, so we’re chasing them right now. Guys stepped up and had a huge effort,” Oettinger said.
“[Connor Hellebuyck] is obviously top of the line and top of the mountain when it comes to goalies, so you know you’re not going to get much on him. [Marchment] stepped up and made that huge play, and guys sacrificed and played the right way the rest of the game.”
Dallas would end up getting the early Jets goal back in that same period when Wyatt Johnston finished a two-on-one break following a feed from Thomas Harley on a play setup by Jason Robertson.
After Marchment’s goal at 12:13 in the third period, Roope Hintz scored into the empty net with just seconds remaining to seal the win.
Dallas will hit the road tonight as they make their first-ever visit to Salt Lake City Utah where they will take on the Hockey Club in the second night of a back-to-back.
