Stars Offense Shutdown In 2-1 Loss To Canes

It was a battle between two of the NHL’s best on Tuesday night and unfortunately, it did not bounce the Stars way.

Dallas was mostly shut down by a strong Hurrican defense and a 22-save effort by Pyotr Kochetkov.

The Stars fell 2-1 at the hands of the Canes at the American Airlines Center in the first of two national TV games for Dallas.

Jake Oettinger faced just 19 shots making 17 saves but unfortunately despite the low shot total, Dallas still didn’t do enough.

“I think both teams were great defensively. They just got a [bad] bounce to go their way,” Oettinger said.

“I think in that circumstance it’s just a bad bounce. I don’t know what we did to deserve that, but we’ve had a couple of those go our way too, so that’s just how it goes sometimes.”

After a defensive stronghold through the first period, Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored the first of his two goals at 17:07 off a failed clearance from the Stars.

Less than ten minutes later Thomas Harley tied the game in front of the net when he put home a rebound to make it 1-1.

However, the big and eventual game-winning punch came just 24 seconds later when Kotkaniemi scored his second of the night on a rebound misdirection that was initially saved by Oettinger.

Dallas did not get a shot on goal in the final seven minutes when they were attempting to tie the game and sent it to overtime.

“Neither team was really giving a lot of room or opportunities,” Dallas coach Pete DeBoer said. “I thought up until the goal was scored, we had the better opportunities, especially in the second period.

They found the first goal. We score to tie it up, and the disappointing part is that next shift. We get out of position, we leave the zone a little early, and they get it right back. Those are playoff-type moments where you have to recognize the importance of the next shift.”

The Stars will be back in action on Friday night when they welcome the Vegas Golden Knights to the AAC.
