Stars Go 3-3 in Shootout To Stay Undefeated

Coming into the final game of their homestand on Tuesday night, the Stars had cruised to a pair of wins over the Islanders and Kraken.

The San Jose Sharks would prove to battle the Stars tighter as it took a shootout for Dallas to preserve their perfect record.

San Jose dominated the first half of the game, forcing Dallas to play on their heels for a long stretch for the first time this season.

Tyler Toffoli helped the Sharks capitalize on that hot start at 6:24 in the second period when he snipped one past Jake Oettinger to make it 1-0.

Matt Duchene tied the game when he tapped in a pass from Mason Marchement on a beautiful combination play.

Duchene knew that his goal was huge because of the way that the Sharks had the Stars on their heels for almost the entire night until that point.

“They outplayed us to start the game. I think in the second we started to take over,” Duchene said. “Had it not been for some self-inflicted wounds, I think we hopefully wouldn’t have made it that close. Sometimes it takes 65 plus (minutes) to get it done. We’re happy with the start, but we’re not looking back. We want to keep putting the points away.”

Former Dallas Star Ty Dellandrea scored at 15:12 when he buried home a rebound to make it 2-1 San Jose.

“[Scoring was] something I really wanted to do, but it really doesn’t matter. We’ve got to get wins and find ways to close out games,” Dellandrea said.

Exactly two minutes later, Roope Hintz retied the game for the Stars when he put home a one-timer from the left side.

In the third period, both teams had chances for a breakthrough but Stars goalie Jake Oettinger had a strong frame finishing the night with 25 saves on 27 shots.

Overtime was a lot of back and forth with not a ton of action as both teams managed just a few shots leading to a shootout.

Jason Robertson started the shootout with a top-shelf snipe, followed by a five hole goal by Duchene. With Dallas needing a goal to win it, Wyatt Johnston scored his first NHL shootout goal to give the Stars a win and a 4-0-0 start.

“They played really hard. That was four [games] in six [nights] for us, and I thought some self-inflicted mistakes that we obviously take a lot of pride in not beating ourselves. That’s obviously something we’ve got to eliminate,” Dallas coach Pete DeBoer said. “But a win’s a win in this league. You look around and you’ve got to find a way to bank as many points as you can, and we found a way.”
