Stars Get Shootout Win Over Habs To Extend Winning Streak
The Dallas Stars’ winning streak has officially moved to another country
Dallas defeated the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 in a shootout at the Bell Centre on Saturday to extend its winning streak to seven games.
“The points are critical,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “We dug ourselves a little bit of a hole early from the teams at the top, so we’re slowly closing that gap. But it’s not an easy gap to close in this League. You’ve got to put together streaks like this, and when you get on one you want to keep it going as long as possible.”
With 55 points and three games in hand against the first-place Winnipeg Jets, the Stars know it will be a tight race until the end.
“It feels like no one ever loses in our division, so it’s going to be tight down to the end,” Jake Oettinger said.
Focusing back on Saturday night, Oettinger was the Stars’ best player, making 30 saves on 31 shots, including three for three in stopping the Habs in the shootout.
The only goal Oettinger allowed came off a one-timer from Patrick Laine, which deflected off the stick of Stars defenseman Lya Lyubushkin during Montreal’s 5 on 3 power play.
Just over two minutes after that goal, Jamie Benn picked a corner to tie things at one in what would be the last goal of the night until the shootout.
Overtime saw chances for both sides but it was the goalies who shined helping take this one to a shootout.
Habs netminder Sam Montembeault stopped several key Dallas chances only to be matched by Oettinger on the other end.
In the shootout, Dallas took a 1-0 lead when Jason Robertson walked in and nailed one past Montembeault before you even knew it left his stick.
After that, Oettinger stole the show-stopping three in a row to extend the Stars winning streak to seven games.
Dallas will be back in action on Sunday as their road trip continues with a battle against the Ottawa Senators.
