Stars Depth Helping Lead 3-0-0 Start

The Dallas Stars are off to a 3-0-0 start after taking their first game of the year in Nashville followed by back-to-back home shutout wins over the Islanders and Kraken.

Depth has been the biggest difference for the Stars in their last two seasons allowing them to reach the conference final in consecutive years.

Early in the 2024/2025 season, that same depth has been on full display, leading the Stars to be one of just five NHL teams to be undefeated after three games.

So far this year, the Stars have had seven different players score its first nine goals. The only two players with multiple goals are Mason Marchment who scored two in the season opener against the Preds and Tyler Seguin who scored two in the home opener against the Islanders.

“That’s one thing we take pride in is our depth. You need everyone to chip in,” Wyatt Johnston said after the Stars’ 3-0 win over the Kraken on Sunday.

“It’s great that it’s been spread out so far. I think that’s what makes us really tough is we’ve got four lines that can score and make plays.”

On Sunday the Stars got their first fourth-line goal of the season when Sam Steel tapped one home for Dallas’ first tally of the night.

Dallas has yet to see a defenseman get on the score sheet through three games, so that will be an interesting storyline for the next few games.

Last season, Stars’ D-man scored just 38 goals with Thomas Harley (15) being the only player with ten or more.

Not only do the Stars have depth on the scoring side of things, but a newfound backup goalie looks like he could be taking some of the load off Jake Oettinger this season.

Casey DeSmith, made his Stars debut this season and provided a shutout as he stopped all 25 shots he faced in Dallas’ win over Seattle.

If the Stars can get Oettinger some much-needed rest down the stretch of the season, that would be key in making sure he is fresh for what Dallas hopes is a long playoff run

However, right now, the playoffs are the last thing on Peter DeBoer’s mind, Dallas is focused on keeping their hot start rolling for as long as they can.
