Stars Comeback Falls Short in 4-2 Loss To Sabers
It took the Dallas Stars over 55 minutes to get on the board on Tuesday Night at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo on Tuesday night.
Thomas Harley’s pinball wrister found the back of the night to spark what would be a comeback fell short in the Stars 4-2 loss to the Sabers.
With Jake Oettinger on the bench, the Stars scored two six-on-five goals shooting out a glimmer of hope before Alex Tuch scored into the Dallas empty net with 11 seconds left to put the game away.
Despite the late comeback efforts, the Stars failed to execute for most of the night, resulting in their second loss of the season.
“It’s frustrating,” Dallas captain Jamie Benn said. “It seems like we haven’t really found it yet this year. I think probably tonight was just kind of a reflection of our 5-on-5 game. Just not working hard enough, not working hard enough away from the puck, supporting the puck, not winning any battles, and face-offs as well.”
Both teams had their chances in what was a back-and-forth first period but neither side found the scoresheet leaving things knotted after the first frame.
At 12:21 in the second period, the Sabers broke the ice Peyton Krebs batted a rebound out of the air and past Oettinger to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, Buffalo had another when Ryan McLeod scored in his fourth straight game to make it 2-0.
Tage Thompson continued his hot start to the season in the 3rd period delivering his fifth goal at 4:17 and Dallas found themselves in a 3-0 hole.
In addition to Thomas Harley’s goal, Tyler Seguin also found the scoresheet at 6 on 5 in his return to the lineup.
Dallas had hope as they cut the deficit to one with two minutes still left on the clock but ultimately the Stars worn out 6 on 5 legs showed as they could not find the equalizer.
“I thought the story of the game was their execution was better than ours,” Dallas coach Pete DeBoer said.
“Power play included, but 5-on-5, too. And I thought they were hungrier than us. They blocked more shots, they won more battles, won more face-offs. Tough to go on the road and win if you’re not as desperate as the other team.”
