Stankoven Leads Stars Past Leafs To Close Road Trip

The Dallas Stars five-game road trip is officially in the books and it couldnā€™t have ended on a better note.

Logan Stankoven said goodbye to the monkey on his back as he found the back of the net twice in the Stars’ 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

ā€œItā€™s nice to contribute,ā€ Stankoven said. ā€œI just think the thing for me is I havenā€™t changed the way I play.

Maybe tonight I went to the net a bit more and got some good bounces. But I donā€™t think Iā€™ve changed the way I play even though the puck hasnā€™t been going in. I try and hunt pucks and be good defensively and do the little things right.ā€

It was Austin Matthews who got Toronto on the board first beating his Team USA Four Nations teammate Jake Oettinger short side to make it 1-0.

Oettinger would get the last laugh as that was the only one of the Leafs’ 28 shots to make it into the back of the net.

Just minutes after the Matthews goal, Stankoven tied the game at one after he whacked one in from right in front of the net.

Early in the second, it was his fellow rookie Mavrik Bourque who deflected home a point shot on the power play to score what would go down as the game-winner and make it 2-1 Dallas.

Once again on the power play in the 3rd period, it was Matt Duchene who finished a gorgeous between-the-legs shot to make it 3-1.

Later in the frame, it was Stankoven again who had a Duchene shot bounce off him and into the net to make it 4-1.

ā€œItā€™s tough at times,ā€ Stankoven said. ā€œA lot of chats with different people, my parents, everyone was very supportive.

It wasnā€™t easy but thereā€™s always better days ahead and sometimes you have to sit back and realize you are in the best League in the world, and you have to enjoy it. Sometimes when you are trying too hard, thatā€™s when the puck doesnā€™t go in.ā€

The win helped Dallas finish the road trip with a 4-1 record as it returns home for just one game before being right back on the road.

ā€œIt was a solid road game,ā€ Dallas coach Pete DeBoer said. ā€œI thought our start, we mismanaged the puck a little bit in the first and that team is really dangerous, but I thought as the game went on, we got better, we got more detail in our game and thatā€™s how you have to play against them to have success.ā€

Dallas will be back in action on Thursday when they take on the Montreal Canadiens from the American Airlines Center.
