White Sox win, 9-5, closing the door on a historic season

White Sox and MLB fans around the world will never forget what was endured during the 2024 season. Luckily, it all ended today with a surprising series win and a 9-5 victory against the Detroit Tigers. Chicago ended the season winning five of their last six games, but that one loss would be the one that makes history: Their 121st loss, surpassing the 1962 New York Mets for most in the modern era of MLB baseball. Either way, there’s always positives right? Well, maybe not for White Sox fans.

Jonathan Cannon went on to start for the South Siders, who has been a positive for the team in his development this season. Although the 5-10 record and 4.49 ERA doesn’t indicate it, the 24-year-old showed that he could be a key part of this rotation moving forward.

The scoring in support of Cannon started early in top of the second inning against Kenta Maeda, who yes, is still in the league, and the division. Lenyn Sosa and Bryan Ramos had back-to-back singles, followed by Korey Lee joining the party to give the team a 1-0 lead. Dominic Fletcher had a sacrifice fly to score another run and make it 2-0.

Oh, and by the way, before the game the White Sox social media team tweeted out an official statement by Jerry Reinsdorf. Finally, right? Seems fitting that it was released on a Sunday, before the season finale and a Bears game, so nobody could focus on what was said. Either way, in case you missed it here it is. Feel free to form your own opinions, if you even bother reading.

That said, Lenyn Sosa hit a three-run home run to extend the lead to 5-0.

The 5-0 lead quickly disappeared by the bottom of the fifth inning, as Kerry Carpenter hit a grand slam off of Cannon to put the Tigers right back in this game. And by the way, by no means was this a throwaway game for the Tigers. If they won, they would have played the Baltimore Orioles in the Wild Card Series, who they were 6-4 against this year. A loss would mean they would play the Houston Astros instead, who they were 4-6 against. So, the sold out crowd got back into this game very quickly only down one run. Usually, a team that is now the new worst team in MLB history would probably lose its spirit — and the lead. Instead, they actually did the opposite and *checks notes* opened the lead up further?

The top of the seventh started with a Luis Robert Jr. single, Zach DeLoach walk, and Sosa walk. With the bases loaded, Ramos had a RBI single to drive in two runs and extend the lead to 7-4. Lee reached on a fielding error for an RBI, and Jacob Amaya singled to make it a 9-4 ballgame.

Prelander Berroa got into a bit of a jam in the bottom of the eighth inning, walking in a run with the bases loaded to cut the lead to 9-5. Luckily, that would be all for the Tigers. Enyel De Los Santos closed it out in the ninth inning, and we all exhaled a sigh of relief after a double play ended the game.

Ramos made a statement offensively the last few weeks of the season, along with Sosa. Grady Sizemore gave the ballclub a much-needed boost as he took over for Pedro Grifol as manager. Now the search for next year is in focus. Will Sizemore stay in the mix, or will we see a fresh face? Many questions will be answered as the offseason gets underway.

The season from hell is finally over, Sox fans. We made it through, well actually did we? Who knows who is still here or not. I made a comment at the beginning of the season stating that I didn’t think it could get more rock-bottom than the 2023 season, and boy was I wrong. All I can say is that I hope for a better year in 2025, as does everyone else. Now, it’s time to sit back and take a much-needed break with the love/hate relationship that is, the Chicago White Sox. Thank you to everyone who stayed loyal this year, even through the ups and downs. I don’t know what condition it will be in, but we will be back next year. Here’s to hoping changes are made and we can look back and truly say that this was rock bottom, because I don’t know how much further down it can get.
