White Sox win 7-2 in the most important Chicago game today

I am back and so are the Chicago White Sox? Fully kidding, but it was a winning day for Chicago sports today as the South Siders took on the Boston Red Sox and put up a five-spot in the ninth inning to secure the win. I am also proud to announce that this win snaps my 13 game losing streak of covering games, as the last game I covered that ended in a win dates back to May 5, where the White Sox won against the Cardinals. Going an entire summer without covering a win definitely shows how bad this team has been, but I am honored to finally be able to snap that streak.

In case anyone was actually watching this meaningless September game and the worst team in baseball history over the Chicago Bears season debut, lets go over how this one went at Fenway.

Chris Flexen was on the mound against Richard Fitts, who was making his MLB debut and first career start. Not much happened early on, but Connor Wong had a solo shot to put the Bad Sox up 1-0. The Good Sox had a chance in the top of the fourth with two on, but Korey Lee ended the inning with a double play to shut that threat right on down. The scoring came in the top of the sixth inning as Zach DeLoach reached due to a fielding error, Luis Robert Jr. followed with a single, and Andrew Benintendi had a really exciting… RBI groundout!

That would be the end of the line for Fitts as he had a very solid debut. With two outs, Lee redeemed himself with a “single” to score Robert Jr. from third. I say that sarcastically because it really was a dribbler back to the pitcher Greg Weissert, who then bobbled and couldn’t get the ball to first.

In the bottom of the inning the Red Sox of course came right back to tie it up 2-2 after a Wilyer Abreu home run. Flexen would make it out of the sixth but that would be it, as he ended with six hits, two runs, one walk, and six strikeouts.

And then, the impossible happened. Well actually, it was a few impossible things. First, the bullpen didn’t allow a run in a tie game, giving the White Sox the opportunity to do what they did. Second, the White Sox scored five runs in the ninth inning to go up 7-2.

Zack Kelly was on the mound for the Red Sox as the disaster started with an Andrew Vaughn single. Bryan Ramos would go in to pinch run. Lenyn Sosa had a one-out single to put runners on first and second. Nicky Lopez would go in to pinch run for him. Dominic Fletcher was the first hero, as he doubled to score Ramos and secure a 3-2 lead. After an intentional walk to Gavin Sheets, Jacob Amaya singled to score Lopez and extend the lead to 4-2. DeLoach joined in on the action with a single of his own to score two more, and Luis Robert Jr. had a sacrifice fly to cement the lead to 7-2.

Even with Justin Anderson on the mound, the Red Sox couldn’t put up a fight. Our beloved team has moved to 33-111. With a Bears win as well, I will say it does feel good to have a victory Sunday. The team will be back at Guaranteed Rate Field tomorrow to start a series against the Cleveland Guardians. That should be fun. Enjoy the rest of this beautiful Sunday, and see you back out there tomorrow.
