White Sox select SS Sam Antonacci in the fifth round of the 2024 draft (No. 140 overall)
With the 140th pick in the 2024 MLB draft, the White Sox used their fifth round selection on shortstop Sam Antonacci of Coastal Carolina University.
Two themes remain in play for the White Sox here. First, Antonacci is being drafted at a placement far below the White Sox draft slot here, projecting more seventh round than fifth. (It must be noted, though, that a year ago Antonacci was tabbed as the No. 316 talent in the draft, so he’s moving in the right direction.
Second, continuing the trend of the 2023 draft, Antonacci is a bat-to-ball hitter, with more walks than strikeouts in every college season the fourth-year junior played.
The Springfield native was a standout in 2023, as the Juco Player of the Year for Heartland CC in Normal, Ill. He transferred to Coastal Carolina and was a standout, making the First Team All-Sun Belt team after a .367/.530/.504 assault.
As you might note from the slugging above and the power rating below, Antonacci is a slap hitter who will struggle to find the power alleys as a pro. The MLB brain trust during the draft tabbed Antonacci as a “utility type” who will have a steep uphill climb once he hits the White Sox system.
