With the 169th pick in the 2024 MLB draft, the White Sox used their sixth round selection on catcher Jackson Appel of Texas A&M University.

The White Sox have been nothing if not consistent, again grabbing a player ranked (in this case, not ranked at all) lower than draft slot. Additionally, Appel even as a catcher reflects the Chicago trend of bat-to-ball hitters.

How memorable was Appel’s career? MLB Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo, a Penn graduate, did not realized that Appel played his first two seasons for the Quakers. That said, his colleague Jim Callis had some muted, but positive things to say about Appel — namely on his defensive skill and ability to handle a pitching staff.

Appel is a native of Houston. Playing three years of Division I ball between the Ivy League and the SEC, he walked 80 times against 68 Ks.
