White Sox Minor League Update: July 9, 2024

Apologies to a Charlotte offense that put up 13 hits and seven runs, but our policy has been to avoid coverage of a certain reprehensible human when he’s pitching in the White Sox organization, and thus we will provide only score and box score link below. However, some other highlights — pitchers’ duels and slugfests alike — as you read on.

Durham Bulls 10, Charlotte Knights 7 (Gameday box) (Statcast box)

This story should provide a good explanation for our lack of recap here.

Mississippi Braves 6, Birmingham Barons 0 (Gameday Box)
Birmingham has been as bad in the second half (4-9) as it was in winning the first-half Southern League North Division title, and tonight both the pitching and offense faltered. It was a second straight poor start for Tyler Schweitzer (4 IP, 7 H, 5 R/4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K), as cracks in the once-vaunted Barons rotation are showing now with the losses of Drew Thorpe (White Sox) and Ky Bush (Knights). Schweitzer dug the hole — with no help from Tristan Stivors (IP, 2 H, 3 K, 3-of-3 inherited runners scored) whose firefighting failure added three runs to Schweitzer’s line — and the Bham offense jumped in, turning six hits and three walks into zero runs, nine left on base and an 0-for-6 with RISP.

GAME MVP
Tyler Neslony (LF)
2-for-3, BB

RUNNER-UP
Troy Claunch (C) 2-for-4, 2 K, 0-for-2 CS

Winston-Salem Dash 11, Greensboro Grasshoppers 9 (Gameday Box)
This was a three-act game if ever there was one, with almost all scoring packed into Act I (9-8, Grasshoppers through four innings), middle relief flexing in Act II (all zeros from the fifth to the seventh) and a dramatic twist in Act III (the visiting Dash strike for three in the eighth and hold on for the win). All the nominees are listed below, but our pick for Best Actor on this night was the five-RBI performance of Jordan Sprinkle, who put the Dash ahead for good out of the 9-hole with a two-run double in the eighth.

And then, Jordan did this, to add an insurance run:

Technically, make this a co-MVP, as Caden Connor clocked a three-run shot as his first High-A hit!

GAME MVP
Jordan Sprinkle (2B)
2-for-5, 2 R, 5 RBI, 2 K, 2B, HR, SB, 42.8% WPA

RUNNERS-UP
Caden Connor (1B)
2-for-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, HR, K, 31.0% WPA
Wes Kath (3B)
1-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR, BB, 2 K, 18.9% WPA
Samuel Zavala (CF) 0-for-2, R, 3 BB, K
Ryan Galanie (DH) 1-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB, SB
Calvin Harris (C) 2-for-5, 2 R, 2B, K
Eddie Park (LF) 2-for-5, K
Ben Beutel (LHRP) 1 1/3 IP, BB, 3 K
Nick Padilla (RHRP) 2 IP, BB, 2 K, WIN (1-0)
Bryce Collins (RHRP) 2 IP, 2 H, BB, 2 K, SAVE (3)

Myrtle Beach Pelicans 1, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 0 (Gameday Box)
Doesn’t play out as a more of a bummer than losing a nine-inning game on the third-inning sacrifice fly, but that was Kanny’s fate on Wednesday. Thus starter Jake Bockenstedt (4 IP, 4 H, ER, 4 BB, 5 K), Connor Housley and Connery Peters got absolutely ripped off by the bats backing them, who could muster just five hits, two walks — and zero runs.

GAME MVP
Rikuu Nishida (2B)
1-for-3, BB, 13.1% WPA

RUNNERS-UP
Connor Housley (RHRP)
2 IP, BB, 4 K
Connery Peters (RHRP) 2 IP, H, 3 K, 18-of-25 strikes
Wilber Sánchez (SS) 2-for-3, K

ACL White Sox 10, ACL Padres 6 (seven innings) (Gameday Box)
Another game, another 9-hole hitting star. Like Jordan Sprinkle of the Dash, Arnold Prado put the Complex Sox on his back and carried them to a quick, seven-inning victory. The 19-year-old fell a double short of a cycle and tapped in three. In fact, also similar to the Dash win, it was the bottom of the Complex order that did the heavy lifting, as No. 8-hitting catcher Angelo Hernández also drove in three.

Otherwise notable in the game was Yoán Moncada in his rehab debut, singling in a run, walking, and striking out twice from the top of the order as DH.

GAME MVP
Arnold Prado (LF)
3-for-4, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, SB, K

RUNNERS-UP
Angelo Hernández (C)
2-for-4, 3 RBI, R, 2B, 3B, 2-for-2 CS
Emerson Talavera (RHRP) 2 2/3 IP, H, 3 BB, K, pickoff at 1B, WIN (5-2)
Javier Mogollón (SS) 2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, HR, BB
Edrick Felix (3B) 2-for-4, 2 R
