White Sox Minor League Update: July 21, 2024

As a whole, the White Sox system went 4-2 on the day, with Saturday’s rain to thank for the surplus games. The Charlotte Knights and Birmingham Barons both struggled to get the win Sunday after Saturday’s doubleheader sweeps — but the A-ball teams bailed them out, sweeping their own doubleheaders!

Gwinnett Stripers 10, Charlotte Knights 2 (Gameday Box)
Coming off of a doubleheader sweep the night before, the magic seemed to wear off for the Knights as they got smoked, 10-3. Jake Eder (2 IP, 6 H, HR, 8 R/6 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) had a rough start on Saturday, forcing Charlotte to turn to the bullpen early on, but by then too much damage already was done. The other issue was that the defense made three errors and couldn’t get out of their own way.

Both Touki Toussaint and Johan Domínguez gave up another run each to get the Stripers to 10 by the ninth, and the team struggled as a whole with control today, walking 10 batters against nine Ks across all seven pitchers.

Oscar Colás was the only bright spot for the bats, accounting for the only two runs scored by the Knights.

GAME MVP
Oscar Colás (RF) 1-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI, 2 K

RUNNERS-UP
Nicholas Padilla (RHRP) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Lenyn Sosa (2B) 1-for-4, R
Deivi Garía (RHRP) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K

Chattanooga Lookouts 4, Birmingham Barons 1 (Gameday Box)
The Barons offense only had two hits, certainly struggling to get runners on the bases. Terrell Tatum was the only batter to record an RBI and attempt to provide starting pitcher Mason Adams (5 IP, 5 H, HR, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K, LOSS), any run support whatsoever. Adams has been one of the best pitchers on the Barons, and he does a really great job pushing through and getting the job done on days that he might not be at his best, as he still sits at a 2.36 ERA.

Chase Plymell (2 IP, H, HR, R, K) gave up another insurance run to the Lookouts, but the offense still couldn’t produce in the final innings of the game, even with strong bullpen support from Anthony Hoopii-Tuionetoa and Caleb Freeman.

GAME MVP
Terrell Tatum (LF) 1-for-4, 3B, RBI, E

RUNNERS-UP
Anthony Hoopii-Tuionetoa (RHRP) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Caleb Freeman (RHRP) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Michael Turner (DH) 1-for-3, BB

Game 1: Winston-Salem Dash 5, Asheville Tourists 2 (7 innings) (Gameday Box)
Although he gave up two runs, Juan Carela was a catalyst on the mound, striking out 10 Asheville batters and earning the win for the Dash. Johnny Ray and Max Roberts followed suit out of the bullpen, both going hitless in the final two innings, racking up another three K’s between the two of them.

Wes Kath drove in the first run in the bottom of the first, but the second inning is where the offense really came together. Eddie Park (1-for-3, HR, R, RBI, K) smashed a solo shot to kick off the rally, with a couple sac fly’s from DJ Gladney and Ryan Galanie to score the other two to put the Dash up, 4-1.

Caden Connor’s RBI double in the bottom of the fifth was the final insurance run for Winston-Salem to set themselves up nicely heading into the second game.

GAME 1 MVP
Juan Carela (SP) 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, BB, 10 K

RUNNERS-UP
Eddie Park (CF) 1-for-3, HR, R, RBI, K
Johnny Ray (RHRP) IP, BB, 2 K, HOLD (6)
Max Roberts (LHRP) IP, K, SAVE (2), 8-of-12 strikes
Loidel Chapelli (2B) 1-for-3, BB, SB, CS
Wes Kath (3B) 2-for-3, R, RBI, 2B
Caden Connor (1B) 1-for-3, 2B, RBI

Game 2: Winston-Salem Dash 4, Asheville Tourists 3 (7 Innings) (Gameday Box)
Winston-Salem held on in game two to complete the doubleheader sweep on Sunday, with Lucas Gordon solid in his five-inning start with his only run being from one solo shot in the top of the fourth. Four walks is a bit steep, but only giving up one run after all of that is impressive in my book. He wasn’t the only one that struggled with walks though, as the team as a whole ended up with seven.

DJ Gladney and Caden Connor were the hot spots in the Dash lineup, accounting for all four RBIs, including a Gladney bomb in the fifth to put the Dash up, 4-1.

GAME 2 MVP
Lucas Gordon (SP) 5 IP, H, HR, R, 4 BB, 7 K

RUNNERS-UP
DJ Gladney (RF) 2-for-3, HR, R, 2 RBI, K
Caden Connor (1B) 2-for-3, 2 RBI, SB
Eddie Park (CF) 0-for-2, 2 BB, R
Bryce Willits (LF) 2-for-3, R, 2B, SB

Game 1: Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 7, Augusta GreenJackets 1 (Gameday Box)
The Ballers got off to a solid start with Jake Peppers on the mound, smashing four runs in the first inning to jump to an early lead. Thanks to an RBI single from Jhoneiker Betancourt, followed by an RBI double from George Wolkow, Peppers had plenty of run support to work with before the rain took over.

After a brief rain delay, Manuel Veloz picked up right where Peppers left off, and lasted for four scoreless innings of three-hit ball, striking out two and even picking off a runner at first before earning the win for the Ballers.

The offense continued to roll as well, with Rikuu Nishida and Wilber Sánchez adding to the production to score two additional runs for the Cannon Ballers.

GAME 1 MVP
Manuel Veloz (RHRP) 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, WIN

RUNNERS-UP
Jhoneiker Betancourt (1B) 2-for-5, R, 2 RBI
Wilber Sánchez (SS) 3-for-5, 3B, R, RBI, K
Albertson Asigen (DH) 2-for-4, 2B, 2 R, 2 K
Rikuu Nishida (LF) 2-for-5, 2B, R, RBI, K

Game 2: Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 6, Augusta GreenJackets 0 (Gameday Box)
Another sound performance from the Cannon Ballers for the second game, as Frankeli Arias was efficient in keeping August batters off the base-paths. Patrick Maybach made his third appearance for Kannapolis and pushed through two hitless innings, striking out two and walking one.

The offense took advantage of the Ballers dominant pitching performance, with six different Kannapolis batters getting hits, with three of those being extra-base hits. Ryan Burrowes had a great game and his three-run shot accounted for half of the Kanny runs. A great day all around!

GAME 2 MVP
Frankeli Arias (SP) 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K

RUNNERS-UP
Ryan Burrowes (SS) 1-for-2, HR, R, 3 RBI, E
Jhoneiker Betancourt (1B) 1-for-3, 2B, R, RBI
Patrick Maybach (LHRP) 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K
