White Sox Minor League Update: July 13, 2024

It was a pretty good day for the White Sox affiliates, although not the best for one of the org’s representatives in the Future Stars Game. Charlotte’s Colson Montgomery started the game at third base and got on base twice (catcher’s interference, walk) before departing. However, Birmingham’s Noah Schultz had a nightmare outing, loading the bases on singles to start the fourth inning, walking a run in and hitting another to force home one more, and getting his only out via K; Schultz was pulled at 23 pitches and just his one out, as the NL team was running away with the win.

Charlotte Knights 7, Durham Bulls 5 (Gameday box) (Statcast Box)
The Charlotte Knights, despite being down one infielder due to Montgomery’s appearance at the Fall Stars Game, handily dispatched the Durham Bulls despite being outhit, 11-6.

The Knights made their six hits count, with four going for extra bases. Brooks Baldwin, filling Montgomery’s spot at shortstop, belted his second Triple-A homer and claimed Charlotte’s only longball on the night.

Infielder Wilmer Difo, who has been money for the Knights all season, recorded the only other multi-hit effort among the starting nine.

First baseman Zach Remillard smashed a double and drove in three of Charlotte’s six runs despite only recording one official at-bat.

On the mound, starter and former 2023 Chicago White Sox contributor Touki Toussaint was chased after just three innings. He’d allow all five of Durham’s runs in that span while walking four and fanning three.

A quartet of relievers combined to twirl six shutout innings, with two coming from righthander Deivi Garcia. Reliever Fraser Ellard would close the game out with a scoreless inning in which he fanned two Bulls and earned his third save of the year at the Triple-A level.

Mississippi Braves 3, Birmingham Barons 2 (Gameday Box)
The boys from Birmingham were walked off despite a spirited effort in which three members of the starting nine managed record multi-hit performances.

First baseman Tim Elko, batting third, hit his ninth home run and was the sole member of the extra-base hit club for the Barons. Terrell Tatum, dropped to the 8-spot, managed to record two knocks in an effort to bounce back from a frigid cold streak that dropped him to the Mendoza line despite an excellent walk rate.

On the mound, starter Riley Gowens somewhat successfully navigated a start in which he did not have his best command of the zone. Gowens tossed 4 2/3 innings of two-run ball despite allowing five walks and exiting with a no-decision in tonight’s matchup. His Barons ERA held strong, at 1.86.

Righty Caleb Freeman was saddled with the loss after giving up a solo shot to catcher Tyler Tolve to end the game.

Winston-Salem fell victim to a talented Grasshoppers pitching staff in this low-scoring loss. Dash right fielder DJ Gladney belted the sole extra-base hit for Wintson-Salem in this one, a home run off of starter Patrick Reilly.

Gladney would also go on to record the only multi-hit performance for Winston-Salem Dash when all was said and done in Greensboro.

On the mound, starter Lucas Gordon struggled with his command but got off the hook with a relatively flattering line that included five innings of one-hit ball. He walked three and struck out three in that span while being saddled with the loss.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 4, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 2 (Gameday Box)
A three-run fourth inning propelled the Cannon Ballers to the win in Myrtle Beach. All three of those those runs were courtesy of a double by right fielder Alvaro Agüero, playing in just his sixth game at Single-A.

Center fielder Drake Logan was the lone member of the multi-hit club while going 2-for-4 out of the 6-spot in the lineup.

Starting pitcher Ricardo Brizuela recorded the win after a five-inning effort in which he allowed two runs on five hits and fanned four. Impressively, he was in and around the zone all night, walking nobody and exiting after the fifth inning with a pitch count of 74.

Righty Connor Housley, unscored upon in his first 10 Single-A innings, earned the two-inning save out of the pen. He allowed two hits and one walk while while striking out four Pelicans to secure the win.

ACL White Sox 5, ACL Dodgers 0 (Gameday Box)
The ACL White Sox were beneficiaries of a rare shutout performance by a quartet of talented hurlers in Arziona, Denny Lima threw the first three innings of today’s seven inning matchup, scattering three hits and one walk while fanning three Dodgers. Righty Hale Sims earned the win in his third professional baseball game by tossing two innings of one-hit ball with one walk and one strikeout.

The majority of the ACL Sox’s offensive production came off the bat of catcher Angelo Hernandez. In four trips to the plate, Hernandez tallied three knocks and recorded the only extra-base hit of the afternoon for the Sox. The 18-year-old Venezuelan prospect owns a .266/.355/.468 (.823 OPS) triple slash to this point in the 2024 season. Second baseman Guillermo Rodriguez smacked two singles as part of a 2-for-3 night out of the eight spot that drive in one of the five Sox runs.

Righties Emerson Talavera and Frander Veras combined to finish the game with identical lines of one inning pitched, zero hits or walks allowed, and one batter retired via the punchout.
