White Sox Minor League Player of the Week (July 1-7): George Wolkow

While the hype train has well left the station on a prior prep draftee, Noah Schultz, a high-schooler from last summer has met his promotion to A-ball with bat blazing. Congratulations to George Wolkow for his back-to back Player of the Week status!

This week was nothing special for the Knights, who finished 2-3 to drop to 38-46 overall. However, there was intense competition for the weekly award, but Michael Chavis led the way.

Chavis, 28, crushed two homers and two doubles en route to a 1.177 OPS week. His biggest game was on Thursday, when he homered and singled to help the Knights beat the Jumbo Shrimp. Chavis has not appeared in the majors this year, but he has a solid .811 OPS in 67 Triple-A games between Tacoma and Charlotte.

Brooks Baldwin shined in his Triple-A debut this week. In his first two games at this level, Baldwin finished 4-for-7 with a homer and a walk. Given that debut and his final game in Birmingham (tapping the walk-off hit in a massive, seven-run comeback in the ninth inning to win), it was a big week for the 23-year-old, drafted in the 12th round in 2022. Baldwin is consistently putting himself closer to the majors.

Edgar Quero also got his first taste of Triple-A this week, playing two games for the Knights. Like Baldwin, Quero homered in his debut to make a splash with his new team. Quero had a quiet series against the Jumbo Shrimp besides that, but overall, has still been phenomenal this season.

Not much went right for the Barons this week, as they finished 1-5 to drop to 4-8 in the second half. However, as expected, there were some strong individual performances, and Riley Gowens took the cake.

Gowens, 24, could have hardly been any better, only allowing two measly singles during his five-inning performance. Gowens also totaled seven strikeouts and did not issue any walks or allow any runs. This was the Double-A debut for the former Illini pitcher, who was not fazed by the new level of competition at all.

Edgar Quero, who earned a promotion to Triple-A during the week, also performed admirably, as did Michael Turner, who was making sharp contact throughout the week.

Once again, the Dash broke even, finishing 3-3 this week. There were quite a few positive developments this week, but third baseman Wes Kath edged out the competition.

Kath’s numbers were terrific, as he collected five extra-base hits and reached base safely in nearly half of his plate appearances. The infielder, who the White Sox drafted in the second round in 2021, slugged better than .700 while starting every game during the week.

Samuel Zavala, whose on-base percentage has been sky-high lately, certainly deserves honorable mention, as pitchers struggled immensely to get him out. During most weeks, this performance would have been enough to earn Player of the Week, but Kath was incredible in an even larger sample.

The Cannon Ballers got back on track with a 4-2 week, and despite playing poorly last week, they are almost back up to .500 in the second half.

Would you look at that? George Wolkow was on fire once again, and he somehow topped his 1.220 OPS last week with a 1.423 OPS this week. Wolkow, 18, is quickly inserting himself into the discussion of most exciting White Sox prospects. This is a rare instance where we have a weekly award winner in consecutive weeks. Congratulations to Wolkow for his mammoth hot streak at the plate.
