White Sox Minor League Player of the Week (August 5-11): Tim Elko

The Barons and Dash led the way this week, taking four games in their six-game series. The other affiliates did not have their best weeks, but as usual, all of the weekly award winners were quite impressive.

Charlotte Knights
Record 2-4 (last week), 51-60 (overall), 18-19 (second half)

Knights Player of the Week
Tim Elko .429/.455/.905, 21 at-bats

Colson Montgomery .211/.348/.526, 19 at-bats
Oscar Colás .188/.188/.438, 16 at-bats
Zach DeLoach .368/.455/.684, 19 at-bats
Edgar Quero .500/.500/.688, 16 at-bats
Michael Chavis .364/.417/.727, 11 at-bats
Bryan Ramos .313/.389/.750, 16 at-bats
Carlos Pérez .444/.444/.778, nine at-bats

Sean Burke 4 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 8 K
Johan Domínguez 5 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 4 BB, 2 K
Jake Eder 6 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 3 K
Adisyn Coffey 1 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K

The Knights have been exceeding expectations during the second half of the season, but they stepped on the brakes this week, finishing 2-4.

Tim Elko, a 10th round pick in 2022, is on fire. Elko, who was playing for Kannapolis as recently as June 2023, has made some major strides forward in the past two years. Elko has only played 12 games for Charlotte, but he is lighting up the scoreboard in that time frame, hitting .313/.377/.646 while launching five homers. Largely due to his former Birmingham team’s pitching staff, he did not quite earn any weekly awards this year until now, but this feels long overdue.

Birmingham Barons
Record 4-2 (last week), 56-52 (overall), 15-24 (second half)

Barons Player of the Week
Adam Hackenberg .615/.643/.846, 13 at-bats

Jacob Gonzalez .286/.360/.333, 21 at-bats
Wilfred Veras .429/.520/.619, 21 at-bats

Tyler Schweitzer 6 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 0 BB, 4 K
Noah Schultz 3 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K

After an excellent first half, the Barons have gotten off to a very slow start in the second half. Granted, a lot of that is a result of players being promoted, but still, the 12-22 second half record entering this week was disappointing. The Barons stepped in the right direction with a 4-2 week.

Catcher Adam Hackenberg, an 18th round pick in 2021, had a monstrous week for the Barons, getting on base more often than he didn’t. Hackenberg, 24, is inching closer to the majors, where the White Sox are even thinner at catcher than they are at most positions. Wilfred Veras and DJ Gladney also had terrific weeks at the plate to earn honorable mention.

Shane Murphy 5 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 K
Tommy Vail 5 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 BB, 8 K

The Dash are continuing to creep closer to .500, as they posted four wins in six games against Greensboro.

Ryan Galanie has collected another weekly award, and this is his fifth of the season. Galanie won three of these with the Cannon Ballers, and this is his second with the Dash; no other player in the organization has more than three honors. Galanie was a 13th round pick in 2023, and he has wasted no time working his way up in the organization. During this week, he added two homers and nine RBI to his total.

Frankeli Arias 4 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K

The Cannon Ballers dropped four of six to Salem during an unremarkable week. However, there were solid individual performances, including another one from George Wolkow.

Did you miss Wolkow? It had been a few weeks since he went on a tear, but he made up for lost time with another huge week. Wolkow introduced himself to a substantial part of the White Sox fan community in late June and early July with his ability to hit for power. This week, Wolkow tapped into his potential once again en route to an OPS above 1.300.
