White Sox Minor League Player of the Month (July 2024): Tommy Vail

It was an unremarkable month for the farm as a whole, as none of the teams finished better than .500. However, most of the affiliates were either at or close to that mark, and there were plenty of noteworthy individual performances to speak of.

Charlotte Knights
Record 11-11 (July), 47-54 (overall), 14-13 (second half)

Knights Player of the Month
Edgar Quero .271/.397/.438, 48 at-bats

Colson Montgomery .180/.317/.340, 50 at-bats
Brooks Baldwin .345/.441/.655, 29 at-bats (promoted to White Sox on July 19)
Oscar Colás .284/.338/.418, 67 at-bats
Lenyn Sosa .257/.278/.343, 35 at-bats (promoted to White Sox on July 30)
Zach DeLoach .283/.350/.453, 53 at-bats
Bryan Ramos .229/.315/.354, 48 at-bats

Ky Bush 19 IP, 13 ER, 19 H, 10 BB, 16 K
Johan Domínguez 11 IP, 4 ER, 9 H, 6 BB, 8 K
Nick Nastrini 18 IP, 10 ER, 16 H, 15 BB, 15 K
Sean Burke 14 2/3 IP, 10 ER, 10 H, 8 BB, 19 K
Cory Abbott 11 2/3 IP, 4 ER, 10 H, 4 BB, 13 K

The Knights followed their best month of the season (15-10 in June), with a decent performance in July, breaking even to remain slightly better than .500 in the second half.

Incredibly, after winning Player of the Month for the Barons in June, 21-year-old Edgar Quero kept the good times rolling with the Knights. Quero, who was promoted on July 4, launched a home run in his Triple-A debut, and his OBP fell just short of .400. Despite playing catcher, a position where offensive production is generally not expected, Quero gave the Knights offense a big spark. The White Sox situation at catcher has been quite poor this year, but there appears to be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Birmingham Barons
Record 8-15 (July), 52-46 (overall), 11-18 (second half)

Barons Player of the Month
Jairo Iriarte 9 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 5 BB, 11 K

Michael Turner .262/.351/.369, 65 at-bats
Jacob Gonzalez .136/.172/.182, 88 at-bats
Tim Elko .222/.300/.306, 72 at-bats (promoted to Charlotte on July 30)
Wilfred Veras .241/.286/.342, 79 at-bats
Mario Camilletti .278/.366/.361, 36 at-bats

Mason Adams 17 IP, 7 ER, 19 H, 4 BB, 14 K
Garrett Schoenle 16 IP, 5 ER, 13 H, 6 BB, 14 K
Noah Schultz 11 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 10 H, 5 BB, 10 K
Tyler Schweitzer 23 2/3 IP, 15 ER, 24 H, 12 BB, 25 K
Riley Gowens 17 1/3 IP, 11 ER, 18 H, 10 BB, 21 K
Gil Luna 8 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 5 BB, 10 K

The Barons had another rough month, and they are tumbling dangerously close to the .500 mark overall on the season. Hey, that is kind of like the White Sox franchise (not its 2024 record, of course, but the team is 9,580-9,575 since its inaugural season in 1901).

Despite Birmingham’s struggles, Jairo Iriarte was on top of his game. White Sox fans were trolled (once again) when Dylan Cease’s no-hitter was immediately followed by a Drew Thorpe clunker, but Iriarte, who was also acquired in that trade, was unhittable. In fact, across nine innings in July, Iriarte did not allow any hits, and he struck out 11. Sure, he isn’t Cease (at least not yet), but Iriarte’s impression of the San Diego ace was about as strong as it could have been in July.

Winston-Salem Dash
Record 11-12 (July), 46-52 (overall), 15-17 (second half)

Dash Player of the Week
Tommy Vail 20 IP, 1 ER, 8 H, 12 BB, 30 K

DJ Gladney .240/.284/.427, 75 at-bats
Wes Kath .318/.410/.591, 66 at-bats
Eddie Park .286/.385/.339, 56 at-bats
Caden Connor .239/.271/.435, 46 at-bats
Samuel Zavala .150/.333/.200, 40 at-bats

Juan Carela 14 2/3 IP, 7 ER, 11 H, 4 BB, 26 K
Shane Murphy 21 2/3 IP, 12 ER, 19 H, 1 BB, 15 K
Peyton Pallette 13 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 22 K
Zach Franklin 7 IP, 0 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 9 K

Another month has gone by, and the Dash are still treading water, avoiding falling too far below .500 but not exactly making progress toward becoming a contender.

One huge gift, out of nowhere, has been Tommy Vail. Vail had a fantastic month, striking out 30 and only allowing one run in 20 innings. Vail earned a promotion to Winston-Salem on July 4, and he wasted no time making an impact at a higher level. Since his promotion, the southpaw made four starts, pitching five innings in each of those starts, and he was very difficult to solve in all of them. Vail made a big splash in his High-A debut, striking out 10, only walking two, and only allowing two hits. Congratulations to Vail on the significant step toward to majors he made in July.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers
Record 11-11 (July), 55-42 (overall), 14-17 (second half)

Cannon Ballers Player of the Month
Rikuu Nishida .329/.427/.461, 76 at-bats, 7-for-10 stolen bases (promoted to Winston-Salem on July 30)

George Wolkow .268/.391/.493, 71 at-bats
Arxy Hernández .260/.345/.384, 73 at-bats
Ronny Hernández .346/.414/.442, 52 at-bats
Drake Logan .302/.333/.453, 53 at-bats, 4-for-4 stolen bases

Jake Peppers 13 IP, 6 ER, 11 H, 9 BB, 12 K
Mark McLaughlin 9 1/3 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 5 K
Manuel Veloz 8 IP, 0 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 K
Aldrin Batista 20 IP, 9 ER, 21 H, 6 BB, 19 K
Luke Bell 11 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 8 H, 4 BB, 12 K
Connor Housley 9 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 6 BB, 17 K

The Cannon Ballers continued their mediocre second half with a .500 month. Overall, they are still having a great season, as their 55-42 record is second out of 12 teams in the Carolina League, and their +146 run differential leads the second-place Mudcats by 87 runs.

Rikuu Nishida led the charge this month, posting an excellent batting average and an OBP that was even better. Nishida, 23, was drafted in the 11th round last year. Power is not a big part of Nishida’s game, but he posted a .415 OBP in 90 games in Kannapolis before earning a promotion to Winston-Salem. In 418 plate appearances with Kannapolis, Nishida drew 66 walks and only struck out 51 times. If he can continue to build on his ability to hit line drives, Rikuu can continue moving his way up the system.
