White Sox 8, Angels 4: The Good Guys Bring Their Winning Ways to the West Coast

Who are these guys? A three-game winning streak? An offensive explosion? Four round-trippers? Will they still break the record for the worst team in modern times? I have so many questions, because my brain can’t process such mischievousness from the 2024 White Sox.

The Good Guys started adding to the scoreboard right from the get-go to secure an early 3-0 advantage off Angels starter Reid Detmers. With one out, Luis Robert Jr. worked a free pass, and Andrew Benintendi followed with his 18th bomb of the year. The bell-ringer tied Paul DeJong, who hasn’t been with the club since July 30, for the team lead. Benny’s really trying hard to get himself some trade value in the offseason. With that killer .228 batting average and .692 OPS, teams will be clamoring for the 75 Million Dollar Man.

In a little Andy vs. Andy rivalry for the home run crown, Andrew Vaughn sent a rocket to left center field for his 18th circuit clout of the season.

The Sox got back to business in the second, pumping the score to 6-0. With one out, Jacob Amaya walked, and Zach DeLoach followed with a single. La Pantera kept the line moving with an infield hit. An errant throw on the play by first baseman Nolan Schanuel allowed Amaya to score.

Benintendi followed with a ground out, plating DeLoach. Then Wheels Vaughn legged out a stand-up triple to right, driving home LRJ. SO MUCH scoring!

Lenyn Sosa needed in on the yard party and knocked his own long ball to left in the top of the third. The 24-year-old has been on a heater lately, slashing .345/.350/.431 over his last 15 games.

In the top of the seventh, Benny (2-for-3 with four RBI and two walks on the night) decided he wanted the team lead in round-trippers to all to himself, so he blasted No. 19 to right-center, giving the Sox an 8-2 lead. Keep hitting Benny, keep hitting. I can already hear Boston calling your name.

Righthander Jonathan Cannon was absolutely dominant in the contest’s first six frames. He held the Angels to only two tallies on three hits but then found himself in a bit of trouble in the seventh. After hitting leadoff batter Niko Kavadas, he got the next two outs but then walked Charles Leblanc. With two on and two outs, skipper Grady Sizemore called on Chad Kuhl to replace Cannon. The veteran couldn’t minimize the damage and gave up back-to-back singles, saddling Cannon with two more earned runs. Thanks to the fiery White Sox offense, though, the rookie earned the victory for his 100-pitch, seven-K performance. Relievers Fraser Ellard and Justin Anderson held the Halos scoreless and hitless for three combined final outs.

Can the White Sox go 8-3 in the final 11 games of the season to avoid breaking the 2003 Detroit Tigers record? We’ll all have to tune in to find out. The Good Guys are back at it tomorrow in another late-night West Coast contest. Davis Martin takes the pill to try and keep the winning streak going, starting at 8:38 p.m. CST.
