White Sox 6, Giants 2: The Good Guys defeat San Francisco with a four-run ninth

In this mid-afternoon contest, the Giants couldn’t complete a sweep of the get-right White Sox. Chicago halted their four-game skid courtesy of a four-run ninth frame and claimed their 31st victory. This series overall felt a bit tighter as they didn’t get blown out in either of the losses and demonstrated some fight today. It felt pretty good to get the win.

The Good Guys wasted no time getting on the board against the Giants ace Logan Webb, plating a run in the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter Nicky Lopez jump-started the offense with a long 399-foot triple to center field, his third of the season. Andrew Benintendi followed suit with a timely grounder to second base, driving Lopez home.

The Sox cashed in on another opportunity in the fourth when Luis Robert Jr., who had another great game going 2-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases, led off with a double. Consecutive sacrifice flies by Benny and Andrew Vaughn allowed La Pantera to score.

The South Siders couldn’t notch another run off Webb, who tossed eight innings of impressive five-hit ball. Giants skipper Bob Melvin replaced Webb with Erik Miller, and the Sox executed a much-needed rally in the top of the ninth. With one out, Miller walked both LRJ and Benny and gave up a single to Vaughn. With the bases loaded and one out, the red-hot Gavin Sheets struck out. It appeared that the Pale Hose would waste another opportunity to score—the same old, same old.

Alas, Melvin called on righthander Spencer Bivens to relieve Miller and face California native Korey Lee. The catcher came in clutch and knocked a two-run base hit to center, giving the Sox a 4-2 advantage.

Lenyn Sosa provided additional insurance with a follow-up single, driving in two more and making it 6-2, Good Guys.

Garrett Crochet was great through three innings, surrendering only one hit and one walk, but unfortunately, he ran into some trouble in the fourth. After back-to-back doubles, he got two quick outs before allowing a single that tied the game 2-2.

The bullpen took over for the remainder of the game and delivered a stellar performance. In a shocking turn of events, Chad Kuhl, Justin Anderson, Fraser Ellard, and John Brebbia combined to pitch five scoreless innings. The quartet allowed just two hits, walked no batters, and struck out eight. Ellard, who pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, earned his first big league victory.
