This Week in Winston-Salem Dash Baseball (August 14-20)

Record
1-5
54-61 (overall)
23-26 (second half)

After starting off with a dominant pitching performance to beat Jersey Shore on last Wednesday, the Dash suffered a setback, finishing the week 1-5. Overall, the offense did not pull its weight, only scoring 10 runs during these six games. It appeared that the Dash might pull themselves to the .500 mark on the season with a strong week, but that did not happen.

August 14: Winston-Salem Dash 2, Jersey Shore BlueClaws 0
The Dash came out on top to open the series in this low-scoring matchup. This was Aldrin Batista’s second start since being promoted to Winston-Salem from Kannapolis, and he was lights-out. In five innings, Batista scattered three hits without allowing any runs, and he collected eight strikeouts. Overall, Batista has only allowed one run in nine innings with the Dash. He also has 15 strikeouts in this narrow window. The offense did not do much, but given the excellent pitching performance, the offense did not need to in order to win this game. Ryan Galanie and William Bergolla both hit an RBI single to put the only two runs on the board.

GAME MVPs
Rikuu Nishida (2B) 2-for-4, BB
Eddie Park (RF) 2-for-4
Ryan Galanie (1B) 1-for-4, RBI
William Bergolla (SS) 1-for-4, BB, RBI
Aldrin Batista (RHSP) 5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 8 K

August 15: Jersey Shore BlueClaws 3, Winston-Salem Dash 2
Once again, the Dash put two runs on the board, but this time, that was not quite enough. Dash starter Lucas Gordon lasted five innings, and he got out of four of those unscathed. However, in the third, Aidan Miller took him deep for a two-run homer to give Jersey Shore an early lead. The score remained 2-0 until the top of the seventh, when Weston Eberly stepped up to the plate and launched a two-run homer of his own. However, the BlueClaws took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh, when Bryson Ware hit an RBI single against reliever Billy Seidl.

GAME MVPs
Weston Eberly (C) 1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI
Caden Connor (LF) 2-for-4, 3B
Samuel Zavala (CF) 1-for-2, 2 BB
Nick Altermatt (RHRP) 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K

August 16: Jersey Shore BlueClaws 3, Winston-Salem Dash 1
Although the pitching staff had another good day, the offense could not make much progress, so the Dash lost another low-scoring game. An RBI single in the seventh by Rikuu Nishida brought home the only Winston-Salem run of the game. Dash starter Jack Bockenstedt got charged with the loss despite only allowing one run in four innings. Jersey Shore added some insurance against reliever Ben Beutel when Aidan Miller hit his second two-run blast in as many games.

GAME MVPs
Rikuu Nishida (2B) 1-for-2, 2 BB, RBI
Ryan Galanie (1B) 1-for-3, 2B, BB

August 17: Jersey Shore BlueClaws 6, Winston-Salem Dash 5
The BlueClaws came out ready to swing the bat, and they made the Dash pay early and often. Dash starter Tommy Vail, who has been red-hot lately, left the game with an apparent injury after recording only one out. It is unclear how serious the injury is, but it was enough for him to leave this game. As a result, this turned into a bullpen game for Winston-Salem, who trailed by a score of 6-0 after five. The Dash stuck their noses back into the game in the eighth, when a two-run triple by William Bergolla highlighted a five-run inning. However, the Dash failed to score the equalizer, so their losing streak extended to three.

GAME MVP
William Bergolla (SS) 1-for-3, 3B, 2 RBI
Zach Franklin (RHRP) 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K
Bryce Willits (DH) 1-for-2, 2 BB, RBI

August 18: Jersey Shore BlueClaws 4, Winston-Salem Dash 0
The Dash were unable to ride any momentum from their five-run inning on Saturday into Sunday’s game. Winston-Salem was shut out, so the Dash took the loss, even though the pitching staff held up its end of the bargain. Overall, Dash pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts and zero walks. However, of Jersey Shore’s eight hits, two of them were homers, and one of those came in the first inning. So, Winston-Salem was trailing for the vast majority of this game. The Dash finished 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

GAME MVPs
Samuel Zavala (CF) 2-for-4
Peyton Pallette (RHRP) 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 4 K

August 20: Aberdeen IronBirds 1, Winston-Salem Dash 0
In a week filled with low-scoring games, the Dash went out with a bang, dropping Tuesday’s game, 1-0. Batista built on his excellent week on the mound by only allowing one run in six innings. The righthander only allowed two hits, and both of those were singles. However, the Dash offense simply could not get any rally started. Caden Connor hit two singles, and Rikuu Nishida added a single, but those were Winston-Salem’s only hits. On the bright side, reliever Nick Altermatt deserves plaudits, as he added two shutout innings without allowing any hits. Altermatt issued one walk, but he picked that runner off first base.

GAME MVPs
Aldrin Batista (RHSP) 6 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K
Caden Connor (1B) 2-for-4
Nick Altermatt (RHRP) 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K
