Sox Populi 2024 White Sox Minor League All-Star Team: Tyler Schweitzer

Tyler Schweitzer
Left-Handed Starting Pitcher
2024 SSS Top Prospect Ranking 32
Birmingham Barons

Tyler Schweitzer, 24, was born in Indianapolis and was drafted by the White Sox in the fifth round in 2022. Schweitzer started the season with Winston-Salem, where he was a very reliable member of the rotation. Schweitzer posted a 3.74 ERA and a 3.62 FIP in 45 2/3 innings across nine starts with the Dash. On June 11, Schweitzer was promoted to the Birmingham Barons, and he remained there for the rest of the season. Schweitzer had a 4.17 ERA and a 3.50 FIP in 86 1/3 innings with the Barons.

Schweitzer struggled to avoid issuing walks with the Dash in 2023, but walks were not an issue at either level for him in 2024. Schweitzer’s rates for the three true outcomes were unusually consistent, as he had a 9.3 K/9 rate, a 2.8 BB/9 rate, and a 0.8 HR/9 rate in both High-A and Double-A. Given the excellence of the Southern League champions’ pitching staff, Schweitzer’s ERA with the club did not stand out, but he deserves more credit than his ERA would indicate. Opposing hitters slashed only .237/.299/.375 against him, and he allowed a disproportionate amount of soft contact that resulted in hits with runners in scoring position.

MLB Pipeline took notice of Schweitzer’s strong performance during the season, and he rose to No. 19 in the White Sox top prospect rankings. Per MLB Pipeline, Schweitzer profiles as an all-around pitcher, with average control and a 50 grade on all pitches except for a 55 on his fastball. Based on 2024 results, however, 50 control is likely lower than Schweitzer deserves, and his ability to avoid sharp contact deserves recognition.

Well done to Schweitzer on taking a step forward and making our All-Star team.
