The Dodgers signed Aldrin Batista as an international free agent in June 2022, when he was only 19, for $10,000. The righthander came over to the White Sox with RHP Máximo Martinez last August in exchange for future considerations and $1 million in international signing bonus slot money. While this swap didn’t seem like a big deal at the time, the 21-year-old is another piece of what is becoming significant pitching depth for the system. Batista could possibly be used to shape the future staff in Chicago or be dealt in a trade package to land more offense, which the South Siders desperately need.
During his time with the Boys in Blue, Batista pitched in the DSL and ACL and was impressive in both. His 2023 performance in Arizona was particularly noteworthy, where he went 3-1 with a 12.46 K/9 in 39 innings. After being traded to the Pale Hose in August, Batista made five starts for the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers and went 0-0 with a 2.66 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP. Opponents couldn’t seem to get much going against him, hitting just .209 over 23 2/3 innings.
In 2024, the Sox again assigned Batista to Kannapolis, and he started 17 games for the CBs before being called up to Winston-Salem on August 6. The hurler went 8-4 with a 3.51 ERA and an outstanding 9.25 K/9 over 17 starts in Low-A. Then in five starts with the Dash, he was 2-1 with a 1.04 ERA and a 10.04 K/9. Again, the competition had little chance of getting on against him, hitting a paltry .176. You start to get the feeling that as the season gets longer, Aldrin gets stronger.
His overall stuff is pretty solid. He has a two-seam and four-seam fastball that ranges from 93-96 mph with a change and slider to compliment. With a 6´6´´ and 185-pound frame, there’s also an opportunity for him to add some strength and, in turn, possibly pump up the velocity a tick or two. However, the downside to this young arm is that, like many pitchers in the Chicago system, his 3.51 BB/9 could benefit from further development, and at 21, there’s still ample time for him to improve upon it. There’s a lot of upside for this righty, and it should be fun to watch what the future holds.
