Sox Populi 2024 White Sox Minor League All-Star Team: Adisyn Coffey

Adisyn Coffey, despite sneaking into the system during the 2020 “non-draft” of five rounds, as a two-way player, no less, has blossomed into the top closer prospect in the White Sox organization.

Huh?

Yeah, in spite of Coffey being consistently placed in high leverage in his short pro career, he didn’t necessarily do a lot with it. The righty didn’t even surface in the White Sox system until 2022, as a Low-A closer too old for his level; and with the Cannon Ballers, he flashed the saves (seven, in 32 games) but had peripherals that induced a yawn, if not a what? Somewhat the same followed in 2023 … although Coffey started moving up the ladder faster, ending with an 18-game stint in Birmingham, an age-appropriate level.

Coffey was tabbed for Arizona Fall League play, an indication of the esteem for, or at least the curiosity over, the late-inning arm. But even in that, Coffey disappointed, getting scant play and seeing no success over his seven games for the Desert Dogs.

So forgive us (back at South Side Sox) for not holding Coffey in enough regard to make him a Top 100 Prospect for the White Sox this season (leading into 2023, he wasn’t too much more esteemed, at No. 94).

However, the 6´2´´burner came in hot for the 2024 season, crushing his repeat of Birmingham to the tune of just one earned run in 17 innings and a sub-1 WHIP, both scintillating career bests. The leap up to Triple-A yielded results nearly as good, in a larger sample: 2.04 ERA over 35 1/3 innings/35 games, 1.217 WHIP, 10 saves and 24 finishes.

He even closed out a Charlotte Knights no-hitter!

Undoubtedly, Coffey is capable of making the leap the the majors in 2025 — in fact, as quickly as breaking camp, provided his Cactus League is a solid one. It’s been an improbable, but heartening run for this “outsider” closer drafted seemingly as much for his third-base bat as his high-leverage arm.
