Royals 10, White Sox 3: Chicago’s skid continues as they lose historic 17th straight game
Is it possible that the South Siders never win another game this year? Yes, yes, it is, and I’m not even being sarcastic. I have never witnessed a baseball team so bad. The Crowns are now 12-1 against Chicago this season. If only we could actually be the Royals now, huh? They, indeed, got the last laugh today, and left Chicago with a sweep.
Today was definitely not Drew Thorpe’s day. Over five innings, he surrendered six runs on seven hits with two walks and no strikeouts. It’s either feast or famine with the rookie hurler. He has five quality starts in which he gave up only five runs. On the flip side, he has four starts where he gave up 24 total runs. When his changeup isn’t working, that four-seam fastball that maxes out around 91 mph looks pretty tasty to opposing hitters.
KC took a quick 1-0 lead on the Pale Hose in the top of the first. White Sox killer #1 Vinnie Pasquantino drove Maikel Garcia home with an RBI single. They extended their lead to 3-0 in the second on a two-run bomb by Freddy Fermin. The Good Guys managed to score a few runs in their half of the second on a two-RBI double by the money man, Andrew Benintendi.
Dominic Fletcher drove home Benny to knot the score at 3-3, but that would be it for Chicago. Newly acquired Miguel Vargas is still hitless with his new squad, going 0-for-4 today with one strikeout. He also booted a ball in the outfield that was scored a double, but he definitely could have caught it.
The Royals continued to tee off Thorpe in the third when White Sox killer #2 Salvador Perez knocked in Bobby Witt Jr., who I swear is ALWAYS on base. Then, in the fifth, they tallied two more, including another RBI by Salvy, making it 6-3. That ended Thrope’s outing and would ultimately be more than enough to award the W to KC.
Touki Toussant came on in relief of Thorpe and tossed the ball pretty well. Over two innings, he held the Royals scoreless, giving up one hit and two walks. Touki would be so much more effective if he could just get past all the free passes.
Chad Kuhl threw a scoreless eighth, lowering his season ERA to 3.69. However, Sammy Peralta, who Pedro sent out to finish the contest, was atrocious. He managed to get only one out while giving up four runs on six hits, including a two-run no-doubter to Pasquantino. Lefty Fraser Ellard, the rookie who made his major league debut last night, replaced Peralta and struck out two for the final outs.
Fans and players alike will get a much-needed break with tomorrow’s off-day. The White Sox will face the Minnesota Twins for a three-game weekend series starting on Friday.
