Giants 5, White Sox 3: Despite 11 hits, Chicago tacks on yet another loss
The White Sox embarked on a late-night, West Coast road trip to San Francisco to face the Giants in a three-game set. With loss No. 96, they inch ever closer to the unavoidable No. 100.
Tonight, righthander Jonathan Cannon was terrific through four innings, surrendering only one hit and one walk. He even made a top-notch defensive grab.
Unfortunately, the 24-year-old got into a jam in the fifth when the bottom of the lineup gave him a run for his money. He surrendered four runs on five consecutive one-out hits and a sacrifice fly, giving the Giants a 4-1 advantage. In the sixth, he served up a leadoff homer to Matt Chapman, pushing the game even further out of reach at 5-1. Cannon’s final line: 6 IP, 5 R, 8 H, BB, 4 K. His record now drops to 2-6 after tossing back-to-back clunkers while raising his ERA to 4.26 with a 1.32 WHIP. Gus Varland and Chad Kuhl came out of the pen and held the Giants scoreless over the final two frames.
The offense tonight was painful, as usual, despite getting 11 hits. In the most 2024 White Sox inning ever, they completely blew it in the top of the third. After a double by Dominic Fletcher, a walk to Corey Julks, and a bunt base hit by Brooks Baldwin, Lenyn Sosa struck out swinging on three straight pitches, and Luis Robert Jr. hit the first pitch into a double play. The Good Guys might like Grady Sizemore better, but they still suck at executing even a SINGLE run with the BASES LOADED AND NOBODY OUT!
At it again, in the fourth, they had first and second and nobody out. I bet you can guess how many tallies they pushed across home plate. Yeah, none.
But … the South Siders finally broke through for a measly run in the top of the fifth on the hustle of Baldwin. The rookie worked a walk with one out and then stole second. With another chance to drive in a runner from scoring position, La Pantera came through this time with an RBI single to right.
The Pale Hose tried to make it interesting in the top of the eighth, closing the gap by adding two more runs. Thanks to a hustling LRJ infield single, Korey Lee’s double, Miguel Vargas’ RBI sacrifice fly and Gavin Sheets’s pinch-hit RBI single, the Good Guys pulled within two runs.
In the ninth, they tried to battle back again with singles by Baldwin and Robert, but with runners on second and third Lee couldn’t come through with the big hit. Largely due to being 3-for-13 with RISP, the Sox ultimately pushed just three runs home in the game and added yet another loss to their already abysmal record.
Fletcher had a nice night going 2-for-4 at the plate and a terrific defensive play in the first. If anyone is vying for a spot on the 2025 roster, it’s this guy. Sizemore has shown confidence in him, and Fletcher has rewarded the faith. He’s been catching everything in the outfield, and is slashing .320/.346/.400 over his last seven games.
