Bird App Recap: Yankees 4, White Sox 1

Hey, White Sox fans! It’s been a while. But we’re back for a special Sox/Yankees edition of the Bird App Recap.

Fans and interim managers alike were experiencing all the feels after last night’s blowout.

Despite the thrill of yesterday’s unlikely victory, the infamous campfire milkshake is still a season highlight.

When the euphoria wears off, though, reality sets in.

The first two innings were calm for both teams as the starting pitchers retired the sides without any drama. Watching New York fans in meltdown mode is always amusing, though.

It was only a matter of time, however, until the Yankees were gonna Yankee, and the White Sox were gonna White Sox. In the top of the third, Jonathan Cannon issued a leadoff walk to Anthony Volpe. Alex Verdugo grounded into a force out, and then, you know, Juan Soto. He cranked his first no-doubter of the evening, over the left field wall. New York 2, Chicago 0.

The bustling White Sox offense from last night was dead, kind of like White Sox Twitter tonight. Who thought it was a good idea to do this Bird App Recap, anyway? I didn’t even think about the game having to compete with Hard Knocks on MAX. That’s what I get for ignoring Chicago Bears football.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the fourth inning, with two outs, that the red-hot Andrew Benintendi slapped a single to center. Don’t get too excited because that was one of only five Sox hits on the night. They did have four walks, however.

The Yanks’ offense was truly just the Soto show, as he drove in all four of their runs. He smacked his second oppo taco in the top of the fifth.

Brady Sizemore pulled Sox starter Jonathan Cannon after 4 2/3 innings and 95 pitches. It definitely wasn’t a bad start; most of the pitchers in the MLB can’t get Soto out either, so don’t feel too bad, Johnny.

And as much as things change, they also stay the same. Case in point: the White Sox in the bottom of the sixth.

And because you can never see too many Soto jacks, you have to watch his third. It was the first three-home run game of his career. Of course, it came off of the 2024 White Sox.

Yankee starter Nestor Cortés, who had been struggling this season, pitched a gem and got himself right against the White Sox. Bronx fans are excited but still dunking on the performance. NY fans don’t know what misery is.

Mark Leiter Jr. came on in relief of Cortés in the bottom of the eighth. The former Chicago Cub surrendered one lonely run to the Good Guys. He walked Corey Julks and Lenyn Sosa, and then Luis Robert Jr. came through with a two-out RBI single.

Comeback? Sizemore magic? Hmmm … maybe?! Old friend Tommy Kahnle, who got the last out of the eighth after Leiter got lit up, found himself in a bit of a jam in the ninth when he gave a leadoff free pass to Andrew Vaughn. Gavin Sheets followed with a double, and in came another old friend, Jake Cousins.

Korey Lee followed with a strikeout because, of course, but then Miguel Vargas walked. Bases were loaded. Queue the suspense.

But nope. Brooks Baldwin goes down swinging. No comeback on the schedule tonight. Oh, and this, too.

Get your rest for the rubber match tomorrow.
