South Side Sweep: Cleveland Guardians Strike Out 18 Chicago White Sox

When you have a chance to beat up the worst team in baseball history, you take it.

The Cleveland Guardians dominated the hapless Chicago White Sox 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep.

Michael Boyd didn’t pitch long enough to earn the win, but he struck out nine batters in just 4 1/3 innings.

In the second half of the game, the Guardians relievers fanned nine more for a total of 18.

Nick Sandlin improved his record to 8-0, and Emmanuel Clase earned his 44th save.

FAST LANE

Lane Thomas pulled off the rare feat of driving in two runs with an infield single … and then he did it again!

Steven Kwan scored on Thomas’ hit in the first inning, and Jose Ramirez came trucking in from second base as well. First baseman Andrew Vaughn held the ball, disbelieving that two runs had scored.

Cleveland catcher Austin Hedges blasted a solo homer to left field to increase the lead to 3-0.

Later in the inning, Thomas pulled off the two-run infield hit again. This time, Vaughn fired the ball home, but he was too late to catch Andres Gimenez.

THE ROADBLOCK

Cleveland was cruising with a 5-0 lead to an apparent easy victory, but Grady Sizemore’s White Sox didn’t fold.

Chicago rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third on a single by Lenyn Sosa, a balk by Boyd, a groundout by Miguel Vargas, and a single by Dominic Fletcher.

The Guardians nursed the 5-4 lead until the eighth, when Will Brennan grounded out to score Thomas with an insurance run.

Cleveland will begin a four-game home series with the Tampa Bay Rays at 7:15 tonight. Gavin Williams (3-8) will start for the Guardians against the Rays’ Ryan Pepiot (8-6).
