Series Preview: Rockies aim for new fortune in July against Milwaukee

June was a historically bad month for the Colorado Rockies as they posted a 7-20 record while posting some of the worst overall offensive numbers. As the calendar turns to July, Colorado returns to Coors Field for a seven-game homestand starting with the Milwaukee Brewers for four games. The Rockies narrowly avoided a sweep at the hands of the Chicago White Sox, the team with the worst record in baseball, winning a 14-inning affair on Sunday. The Rockies have enjoyed slightly more success at home, owning a 16-24 record at home, a factor they will have to hope will work in their favor against a solid team.

The Brewers enter the series with a 50-34 record and leading the National League Central by 6 1/2 games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals. They are 23-21 on the road this season and feature a .255 AVG as a team, the fifth-best mark in MLB. Milwaukee won five of six at home in the past week and now begin a seven-game road trip.

Pitching Probables

7/1: Austin Gomber (1-5, 4.63 ERA) vs. Bryse Wilson (5-3, 3.89 ERA)

Austin Gomber had a rough month of June, going 0-3 as the Rockies lost all five of his starts. After a stellar May, he ended up allowing 24 earned runs across 23 innings (9.39 ERA) in June. In his last outing, Gomber allowed five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings against the Houston Astros. A former St. Louis Cardinal, Gomber has made seven appearances (three starts) against the Brewers, with a 5.40 ERA and 15 strikeouts over 16 2⁄3 career innings.

Bryse Wilson has had another solid season in Milwaukee, pitching to a 3.89 ERA and a 5-3 record across 19 appearances (nine starts). He’s been strong in two of his last three appearances, going 5 1⁄3 scoreless against the Reds and six scoreless against the Rangers. He’s shown an ability to get a handful of strikeouts and issue few walks. In three appearances (one start) against the Rockies, Wilson is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA and four strikeouts across 5 1⁄3 innings.

7/2: Ryan Feltner (1-7, 5.82 ERA) vs. Dallas Keuchel (0-0, 11.25 ERA)

Ryan Feltner went 0-3 in the month of June, finishing with a 6.59 ERA and 26 strikeouts across 27 1⁄3 innings over five starts. He showed some improvement in his last start against the Astros where he allowed four runs, two earned, over six innings of work. He worked into the sixth inning three times last month but allowed four or more runs in each outing.

The Brewers acquired Dallas Keuchel for just $1 from the Seattle Mariners last week but he struggled in his first big league outing. In his start against the Rangers, Keuchel allowed five runs on eight his over four innings as the Rangers clubbed two home runs. He did tally four strikeouts and issued one walk on 71 pitches. In Triple-A this season, he went 7-4 with a 3.93 ERA over 71 innings.

7/3: Dakota Hudson (2-11, 5.84 ERA) vs. Colin Rea (7-2, 3.61 ERA)

Dakota Hudson went 0-4 in June, allowing multiple runs in all five starts as he finished the month with a 7.77 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 24 1⁄3 innings. His last start came against the White Sox, where he allowed five runs on six hits and five walks across five innings. He has struggled mightily at home and in his last home start he allowed eight runs on 11 hits in three innings of work.

Colin Rea had a solid month of June, going 3-0 with a 3.25 ERA and 20 strikeouts across 27 2⁄3 innings. His last time out against the Cubs, Rea went 5 1⁄3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, two walks, and a pair of hit-by-pitches while striking out a season-high eight batters.

7/4: Cal Quantrill (6-6, 3.78 ERA) vs. Tobias Myers (5-2, 3.26 ERA)

Cal Quantrill had a decent June going 2-3 with a 4.26 ERA and 23 strikeouts across 31 2⁄3 innings in six starts but it was a severe step back from his stellar May. In his last start against the White Sox, he allowed five runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts across 5 1⁄3 innings. Quantrill has fared well at home with a 4.05 ERA in seven starts. Lately, Quantrill has struggled with giving up hits and walks as he recorded a 1.48 WHIP in June.

Rookie Tobias Myers has continued to impress and develop and turned in a fantastic June, closing out his month with a 1.44 ERA (five runs over 31 1⁄3 innings) and 24 strikeouts across five starts, pitching to a perfect 4-0 record. The former sixth-round pick allowed just two home runs while he issued just eight walks. Coors Field will be a good test, but a lackluster Rockies offense could prove an easy assignment.

Players to watch

Brenton Doyle has 11 doubles, two triples and seven home runs for the Rockies. Mike Toglia is 8-for-37 with a triple and four home runs over the past 10 games.

William Contreras has 19 doubles, a triple, nine home runs and 50 RBI for the Brewers. Brice Turang is 16-for-45 with a double, a triple, two home runs and 12 RBI over the last 10 games.
