San Diego Padres, Detroit Tigers Ride Strong Pitching to Game 1 Wins
Michael King struck out 12 batters as the San Diego Padres opened the playoffs with a 4-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday.
San Diego was the only home team to win on the first day of the playoffs. Detroit, Kansas City, and the New York Mets won Game 1 of their series.
The Braves had to play two games on Monday to get into the playoffs, so they had nothing left on Tuesday. Atlanta struck out a total of 15 times.
Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run homer for San Diego in the first inning. Kyle Higashioka also went deep for the Padres.
METS 8, BREWERS 4
The Mets scored five runs in the fifth inning, coming back to beat the NL Central champion Brewers in Milwaukee.
Mark Vientos and pinch-hitter J.D. Martinez delivered two-run singles in the big fifth inning for the Mets.
ROYALS 1, ORIOLES 0
Cole Ragans and three relievers shut out the fearsome Orioles offense on five hits as the Royals won the opener.
Orioles starter Corbin Burnes gave up five hits in eight innings, but one of them was an RBI single by Bobby Witt Jr. in the sixth inning.
TIGERS 3, ASTROS 1
Cy Young Award candidate Tarik Skubal (18-4, 2.39 ERA) pitched six shutout innings to lead Detroit to victory in Houston.
The Tigers gave him all the support he needed in the third inning, with RBI singles from Jake Rogers, Trey Sweeney and Mark Vierling.
