Russell Wilson Brings New Life to Pittsburgh’s Offense
Going into the 2024-2025 season, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years as a Steelers fan—a genuine thrill. A big reason for that excitement was the new quarterback room. Finally, we may once again have the kind of talent and leadership under center that could change things. The plan was for Russell Wilson to be QB1, but a calf injury sidelined him, giving Justin Fields his moment.
Fields came out strong, leading us to a 3-0 start that had me feeling optimistic. But then came two tough losses to the Colts and Cowboys—teams I really thought we’d handle. I could feel the energy dip. We picked up a win over the Raiders, and while it was a relief, the thrill just wasn’t there. The defense was grinding, but the offense seemed to do just enough. That’s what was eating at me. Fields had been steady—better than ever before—but we were only “doing enough.” Sure, Fields was solid, averaging about 20 points and just under 300 yards a game, but there was a ceiling. He was good, not great, and Coach Tomlin saw a shot to push for greatness.
In Week 7 against the Jets, in walks Russell Wilson, finally recovered and ready. Right away, it was clear how different the offense felt with Russ under center. His play opened things up—spreading the ball to different targets, launching those classic moon balls to George Pickens for big gains. Points came fast, and the offense looked explosive. Against the Giants the following week, Wilson kept the momentum. We struggled in the red zone but still put up 26 points, showing real promise. Then came our biggest test so far: on the road against the NFC East-leading Washington Commanders. In a gritty, hard-fought game, Wilson threw three touchdown passes, including the game-winner to Mike Williams, our newest weapon.
That pre-season feeling? It’s back. I think most of Steelers Nation feels it, too. For the first time in a long time, the Steelers have an offense that can go toe-to-toe with anyone. Since Wilson’s return, we’re averaging over 30 points and more than 382 yards per game. I know it’s early, but the change is undeniable. This team is finally hitting its stride.
Looking ahead, we’re about to face some of the NFL’s best offenses, and we’ll need every bit of firepower to compete. With a defense and special teams that already keep us in games, the offense is now joining the party. I see a team ready to take the next step. Steelers Nation, get ready—this is just beginning.
