Royal Rumble Flashback: The Last Shall Be First (2007 and 2008)

During the first 19 Royal Rumbles, the wrestler who picked the last number never won the match.

Then it happened twice in a row.

The Undertaker became the first Rumble participant to pick No. 30 and win the match during the 2007 event.

John Cena pulled off the same feat in 2008.

ROYAL RUMBLE 2007

ECW was the WWE’s third brand at this time, and Bobby Lashley retained the ECW title with a win over Test. For some reason, Test just walked away and got counted out.

Batista retained the World title with a victory over Mr. Kennedy.

The highlight of the night was crazy Last Man Standing match between John Cena and Umaga. Cena used a detached ring rope to incapacitate Umaga and win the bout.

The Rumble featured ECW legends Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, and The Sandman. Kane dominated the early part of the match, and The Great Khali later eliminated seven wrestlers.

Undertaker checked in last and had a long battle with Shawn Michaels at the end, previewing their classic WrestleMania battles.

Taker finally eliminated Michaels to win the Rumble. He went on to defeat Batista for the World title at WrestleMania 23 to improve his record at the big event to 15-0.

ROYAL RUMBLE 2008

Ric Flair kept his career alive by defeating MVP. Flair would eventually lose to Shawn Michaels to be forced into retirement.

Chris Jericho got disqualified for hitting John “Bradshaw” Layfield with a chair.

Edge beat Rey Mysterio to retain the World title. Randy Orton hung onto the WWE title with a win over IC champion Jeff Hardy.

Cena shocked everyone by coming out at No. 30 in the Rumble. He had suffered a torn pectoral muscle and wasn’t supposed to return for several months.

Cena eliminated Triple H to win the Rumble. He asked for his title match with Randy Orton at No Way Out, and he won by DQ. That means he didn’t win the title.

Don’t feel bad for Cena, because he ended up winning 16 World championships to tie Flair’s record.
