Royal Rumble Flashback: Batista and Rey Mysterio Make History (2005 and 2006)

Wrestling fans love the Royal Rumble because it’s so unpredictable. You never know when a surprise entrant will show up.

You could also get a photo finish like in 2005, or a record-shattering performance like in 2006.

The 2005 Royal Rumble event started with Edge grabbing the ropes to score an upset victory over Shawn Michaels.

The Undertaker beat Heidenreich in a casket match. Snitsky attacked Taker, but Kane popped out of the casket to help his big brother.

John “Bradshaw” Layfield defended the WWE title by defeating Kurt Angle and The Big Show in a Triple Threat match.

Triple H retained the World title, defeating former Evolution teammate Randy Orton with the Pedigree.

WILD RUMBLE FINISH

In the Rumble, Angle and Michaels eliminated each other to set up their match at WrestleMania 21.

Batista and John Cena tumbled out of the ring together at the end of the match, with the Raw and Smackdown referees declaring their respective man the winner.

Remember when this happened in 1994 with Bret Hart and Lex Luger?

Vince McMahon vowed it would never happen again, so he stormed to the ring and tore both of the quadriceps muscles in his legs.

The match continued, and Batista tossed out Cena to win. They both won the big titles at WrestleMania, defeating Triple H and JBL, respectively.

MYSTERIO WINS IN 2006

Rey Mysterio knocked Chris Benoit out of the record books in 2006, winning the Royal Rumble with a wire-to-wire performance.

Rey Jr. drew No. 2 and lasted the entire 62 minutes, 12 seconds. He tossed out Randy Orton for the victory.
