Series Preview: Rockies kick off second half against the Giants
The second half of the 2024 MLB season is officially underway on Friday. The Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants are at the bottom of the National League West but the Giants are still in the hunt sitting just nine games back in the division and just three games back in the Wild Card. As they aim to get a rotation back on track, the Giants are aiming for more offensive production after a lackluster first half. For the Rockies they begin the process of assessing their current roster while looking for potential trades and sifting through the players that may or may not be part of their future.
Pitching Probables
7/19: Cal Quantrill (6-7, 4.13) vs. Kyle Harrison (5-4, 4.08 ERA)
A key trade candidate, Cal Quantrill may be auditioning for a potential trade to another team. The Rockies are willing to listen to offers, but right now hope he can bounce back after a rough outing in Cincinnati where he gave up five runs in two innings. He noted that he struggled to grip the ball due to the rain, but he will need to bounce back at home.
Kyle Harrison has made two starts against the Rockies this season, working 12 innings and giving up just three runs. In his last start at Coors Field he blanked the Rockies for seven innings in one of his best starts of the year. He’ll look to repeat that success and start the Giants on the right foot in the second half.
7/20: Kyle Freeland (1-3. 6.00 ERA) vs. TBD
Kyle Freeland has been a revelation and man on a mission since returning from the injured list. In his last outing against the Reds, he allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings while striking out a season-high nine batters. He has four quality starts since returning from the IL.
7/21: Austin Gomber (2-6. 4.61 ERA) vs. TBD
Struggles in June have led Austin Gomber to be an average pitcher over the last eight starts While he has shown some glimpses of excellence, he has also struggled with run prevention. He’s allowed at least four runs in all but two starts over the last month. He is another trade candidate that the team hopes can keep showing an ability to work deeper into games effectively.
Players to watch
Heliot Ramos has hit 14 home runs with 46 runs batted in and both lead the Giants.
Brenton Doyle is slashing .422/.509/1.067 in July with eight home runs and 15 RBI for the Rockies.
