Series Preview: Can the Rockies shake off offensive woes against the Angels?
The Colorado Rockies had a forgettable weekend against the San Francisco Giants to kick off their road trip to California and will look to shake off their losing streak as they kick off a new series against the Los Angeles Angels.
Pitching Probables*
7/30: Cal Quantrill (7-7, 4.09 ERA) vs. Griffin Canning (3-10, 5.04 ERA)
This matchup is likely to change at the time of writing because with the Trade Deadline swirling, Cal Quantrill is one of the valuable pieces the Rockies could look to move before 6 p.m. EST. Quantrill has continued to be a quality start machine including his last outing against the Boston Red Sox where he spun six innings and had up just two earned runs. He’s under contract for one more season and with the way the market has been going, it seems prudent to move him.
Griffin Canning on the other hand is likely to stick around with the Angels to make his start. He’s been solid and average this season but has still struggled a good amount. He’s been slightly better this month but has failed to pitch five complete innings in three of his four starts this month. He enters the game on the heels of a start in which he gave up just one run over five innings with six strikeouts and three walks.
7/31: Kyle Freeland (2-4, 6.23 ERA) vs. TBD
Kyle Freeland’s last outing against the Giants was his first real clunker since returning to the Rockies rotation from the injured list. Despite getting eight strikeouts against one walk, Freeland lasted just four innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, including two home runs, on 83 pitches. He has looked much better but the Rockies will need him to return to form and work a little deeper into the game.
8/1: Ryan Feltner (1-10, 4.99 ERA) vs. TBD
Despite what the record and some peripherals may say, Feltner has been fairly solid this season and more consistent in July. He owns a 2.51 ERA this month and recorded at least six strikeouts in all but one start. Walks have been a bit more of an issue but he’s worked a little deeper into games. In his last start, he allowed one run on four hits over six innings against the Giants in a game the Rockies ended up losing and giving him a no-decision.
*Subject to change
Players to watch:
Nolan Schanuel is 11-for-27 with three home runs and six RBI over the last 10 games for the Angels. Logan O’Hoppe as been a key contributor for the Angels this season as well.
Ezequiel Tovar is 20-for-45 with four doubles and five home runs over the last 10 games for the Rockies. Keep on eye on Michael Toglia as a well as he just can’t seem to stop hitting home runs.
