Intriguing Rockies to Watch in the Spring Breakout Game
One of the new inventions for Spring Training this year is the implementation of the Spring Breakout games. the purpose of these exhibitions is a game where MLB teams can showcase their top prospects. The rosters are comprised primarily of prospects from each team’s top 30 list per MLB.com. It’s an exciting new event showcase that MLB has implemented this year and the Colorado Rockies announced their roster in fashion.

It’s no mystery that the Rockies have not been a good team for a long time. Despite being a bad team, their farm system has never produced much flair nor received notoriety. However, this perception has been unfair at times and the Spring Breakout is a good opportunity for more players to get some recognition they otherwise might not get. While I’m excited to see all of these prospects take the field together, I’ll highlight just a few that I’m most excited to see in action.
Chase Dollander (No. 2 Prospect)
Drafted ninth overall by the Rockies in 2023 out of the University of Tennesee, Rockies fans could finally get their first glimpse of Chase Dollander pitching in purple. After he was drafted, the Rockies decided to shut him down for the rest of the season, opting for him to rest from the rigors of the college season and work on mechanical things. He was able to throw a little bit in the instructional league in Arizona after the end of the minor league season, but it’s a significant development for him to pitch in a real situation like the Spring Breakout game. The Rockies have high hopes for Dollander to help lead the rotation in the future, but that will rely on his ability as well as the Rockies to develop and become the ace he could be.
Jordan Beck (No. 4 Prospect)
Another product from the University of Tennesee, Jordan Beck has been making quite the impression in big league camp at Spring Training. It seems like he’s getting a big hit in every game he plays in and the Rockies are more impressed by the minute by his production. Hall of Famer Todd Helton has thought highly of him, adding more credit to his potential in the coming season. There is a strong likelihood that Beck could end up making his big league debut this year and there is no better way to continue to make an impression than by doing well in the exhibition. In 11 games this spring he’s batting .500/.579/.750 with five RBI.
Cole Carrigg (No. 8 Prospect)Â
The Rockies love versatility in their players and no one quite represents that better than Cole Carrigg. Drafted 65th overall in 2023, Carrigg’s permanent position appears to still be pending. While he has a desire to continue catching, his athleticism also makes him a valuable option in the outfield as well as the infield, particularly at shortstop. The switch-hitter dazzled in his first professional season, batting  .350/.408/.600 between the Arizona Complex League and Single-A Fresno. His arm, his glove, his speed, and his ability to hit make him an intriguing prospect to keep an eye on.
Sean Sullivan (No. 14 Prospect)
While the top half of the Rockies Top 30 is dominated by position players, pitchers make up the majority of the second half of the list. Kicking off that half is left-handed pitcher Sean Sullivan. Drafted in the second round in 2023, Sullivan is bred from the same cloth as current Rockies lefty Kyle Freeland. He’s not going to blow you away with his fastball, but his mechanics make him deceptive and he showed an ability to pound the zone in college while missing bats with an excellent changeup. In just four innings of action last season, Sullivan struck out 10 batters, emphasizing that a funky lefty doesn’t have to throw hard to get batters out.
Zach Agnos (NR)
While the roster uses the Top 30 list as a foundation, the Rockies included plenty of unranked players on the roster. One such inclusion is right-handed reliever Zach Agnos. Drafted in the 10th round in 2022, Agnos was excellent in his first full season with Low-A Fresno. He appeared in 47 games, tossing 52 1/3 innings and recording a 2.06 ERA. He showed his excellence at the backend of the bullpen, converting 27 of 29 save opportunities. He also struck out 68 batters against just 13 walks. Opposing batters hit just .198 against him while he posted a 1.01 WHIP last season. Should he replicate those numbers and showcase his skills in the exhibition and through the season, he’s going to be a fun one to watch in 2024.
Overall, the Rockies roster doesn’t look too shabby. There are lots of position players to be excited about as they compete for positioning on the depth chart, but the pitchers are also severely underrated. The Rockies are beginning to get a healthy mix of arms that could help them compete down the line. Starters and relievers alike leave plenty to the imagination of what could be should things go smoothly.
The Rockies will take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in their Spring Breakout game on Saturday, March 16, at Salt River Fields at 5:10 pm. The game will be broadcast on Rockies.tv and MLB network.
