Depth has been the name of the game for the Rockies as they transition into a youth movement and rebuild as an organization. Joining the players already on the 40-man roster, the team has invited 10 of their top 30 prospects to Major League Spring Training, headlined by right-hander Chase Dollander (No. 2). Fellow starters Sean Sullivan and Carson Palmquist had excellent 2024 campaigns with Palmquist finishing the season in Triple-A with the Albuquerque Isotopes while Sullivan and Dollander finished the season with the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats. General manager Bill Schmidt has indicated the team will give Dollander every chance to make the Opening Day roster while Palmquist will likely also get a fair look.
Gabriel Hughes, the Rockies’ first round (10th overall) pick in the 2022 Draft out of Gonzaga, did not pitch in the 2024 regular season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but did make six starts in the 2024 Arizona Fall League and could make his debut in 2025 should he stay healthy and productive.
The bullpen will see plenty of competition with prospect Zach Agnos as a rising star in the system. The Rockies have desired to add depth and experience to the bullpen adding veteran Diego Castillo to the mix alongside players with minimal big-league experience in the forms of Jack O’Loughlin and Jake Woodford. Among the arms that are joining the organization for the first time, Jefry Yan is the only player without any major league service time who posted a 1.71 ERA in 25 appearances this winter in the Dominican Winter League after spending the 2024 season in Japan.
Position player-wise the Rockies welcome veterans Keston Hiura, Nick Martini, Owen Miller and Austin Nola who may fit into the mix for bench roles in 2025 but are likely to spend the majority of their time in Triple-A as depth pieces. Beyond them, the team will get an up-close look at a number of prospects who spent the year at Double-A and below. Outfielder Cole Carrigg and third baseman Kyle Karros, the 2024 Northwest League Most Valuable Player, were instrumental for the Spokane Indians’s championship last season will look to bring their energy to big league camp. Ryan Ritter found some success in the Arizona Fall League after a strong year in Double-A and could start the year in Triple-A as he aims to fit into the middle infield at second base.
The Rockies’ main roster seems set for 2025 on paper, but several openings could be in play. The team has a full 40-man roster so adding any of the NRI would require additional moves that are typical to happen throughout spring training. The likelihood of adding an offensive player appears more far-fetched while the majority of action to keep an eye on will be on the mound, specifically in the bullpen.
