Affected by Altitude Episode 148: Between a Roki and a Hard Place

This episode was recorded on Sunday, January 19, 2025. Stats and events may not be current at time of posting.

Rocky Mountain Rooftop is the Colorado Rockies affiliate of Fans First Sports Network dedicated to covering all things Rockies. Our flagship podcast Affected by Altitude, hosted by Evan Lang and Skyler Timmins, covers all the happenings of the big league club. Other shows under the RMR banner include Every Rockie Ever and Rooftop Mingle featuring player interviews.

This week, Evan and Skyler discuss how those dang Los Angeles Dodgers are at it again. Not content with signing the top free agents to huge contracts with tons of deferred money, they also landed the highly coveted Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki. With seemingly endless resources, and an ability to be near perfect in every other aspect of the game, how can teams compete with the Dodgers? Sure things still have to play out on the field but the Dodgers’ ability to get whoever they want whenever they want stages a level of operation that most teams can’t compete with. Not all teams are financially equal, but they could look to emulate how the Dodgers operate. Meanwhile, we find ourselves asking the Colorado Rockies if they have some kind of a plan beyond the vagueries of “planning to be competitive?” Minor league signings of Keston Hiura and Nick Martini don’t exactly move the needle forward, so what is to be done? Setting goals and making plans seems to be something the team could easily do to at least set some expectations and a path forward. Finally, we wrap things up with projections and expectations for third baseman Ryan McMahon. Can we expect anything different for RyMac or is he such a known commodity that we just hope there is any sort of regression?
