Rockets Extend Young Duo Just Before Deadline
We’ve all heard the saying that deadlines create deals, and the Houston Rockets proved that on Tuesday afternoon.
Players drafted in the 2021 draft had until 6:00 PM EST Tuesday to sign contract extensions as they enter the final year of their rookie contracts.
Houston’s franchise pillars were both drafted in 2021. The Rockets used the number two pick that year to select Jalen Green and then traded with the Thunder to take Alperen Sengun with the 16th pick.
Both players have shown many signs of greatness throughout their first three seasons in the NBA but neither was quite on the max extension level according to the Rockets.
In a pair of moves that Rockets GM Rafael Stone has to be pleased with, Houston extended both Green and Sengun to team-friendly deals.
The news of Green’s extension broke first around 2:45 CST when it was announced the Rockets and the former G League Ignite star agreed to a three-year, $106 million deal.
Green becomes the first player in NBA history to successfully negotiate a 2-plus-1 rookie extension on a nine-figure deal.
In March of last season, Green averaged 27.7 points while guiding Houston to a 13-2 record in that span.
Next up for Green is proving that consistency throughout a full season, something the Rockets hope comes with this new deal.
Just a few hours later, the Rockets announced their other young star, Alprren Sengun was locked up on a five-year $182 million extension.
Last season, Sengun proved himself as one of the NBA’s best young players averaging 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Sengun will look to lead the Rockets team back to the postseason for the first time since the 2020 bubble playoffs.
Houston will bring back much of it’s roster from last season with a young core that figures to be contending for years to come.
