Rockets, Alperen Sengun Have “Legitimate Chance” To Reach Extension
Following a breakout season, the Houston Rockets and Alperen Sengun are in talks about a possible contract extension.
Sources have confirmed that Houston and the 22-year-old from Turkey have a “legitimate chance” to reach an argument before the October 21st deadline.
Last season, Sengun had a breakout season averaging 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 5 assists per night.
This summer, Sengun drew trade interest from multiple teams following his breakout but the Rockets made it clear they were not willing to part with him.
Money will be an interesting factor for the Rockets as both Sengun and 2021 number two overall pick Jalen Green’s contracts will expire after this season.
Houston reportedly will not offer the max to either Green or Sengun in order to keep both on the team moving forward.
GM Rafael Stone has apparently gotten to work at keeping Sengun on the Rockets for the long run.
“We’ve been talking,” Sengun said. “I want to get the contract, and [the Rockets] are trying to negotiate with us and we’re trying to negotiate with them.
So, it’s been good. We’re going to make it work. We still have time, you know, and hopefully, we can make it work.”
2023-2024 saw the Rockets make a 19-game improvement finishing at 41-42 after a 22-60 finish in the season prior.
This season, the Rockets look poised to make at least the play in tournament after just missing out last year.
Houston has not made the playoffs since 2019-2020.
