Revisiting The Ian Kinsler For Prince Fielder Swap

In Major League Baseball, it’s extremely rare for a trade to go down in which both teams swap one player.

However, in November of 2013, the Texas Rangers did just that shaking up their franchise after reaching the World Series twice in the four years prior.

Texas sent star second baseman Ian Kinsler over to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for power-hitting first baseman Prince Fielder.

In more ways than one, this trade did not pan out for the Rangers.

One of the primary reasons that Texas agreed to this swap was to clear room for number one prospect Jurickson Profar at second base.

Profar never really panned out as he ended up hitting just nine home runs and knocking in 32 during five seasons with the Rangers.

Not only did Profar not become what the Rangers thought he would be but Fielder’s era didn’t live up to expectations either for other reasons.

Fielder was forced to medically retire in 2016 due to neck issues that would never allow him to play baseball again.

After playing just 48 games in 2014, the Rangers saw what they thought they would have for a long time with Fielder in 2015.

Playing 158 games, Fielder was an All-Star in a season in which he slashed .305/.378/.463 with 23 home runs and 98 RBI.

Fielder was in the midst of a nine-year contract which would have lasted him until the 2020 season.

We can only imagine how different the tough years of Rangers baseball in 2017-2020 would have been had Fielder’s contract worked out.

As for Kinsler, he spent four strong seasons with the Tigers before they would eventually deal him to the Angels.

Kinsler hit 78 home runs and drove in 300 runs during his time in Detriot.

If you’re judging the deal based on player production, you’d have to think that the Tigers won this deal.

However, there is no telling what would have happened had Fielder stayed healthy and that remains one of the biggest what-ifs in Rangers history.
