Reluctant Challenger Kevin Owens to Face Cody Rhodes for WWE Championship

Kevin Owens doesn’t think he deserves a shot at Cody Rhodes’ WWE title.

Well, that’s too bad, because he’s getting one. Rhodes suggested the idea during the opening of last night’s Smackdown in Tulsa, Okla.

Owens protested that he hadn’t won any big matches lately. He is a former Universal champion, so that alone makes him worthy.

General Manager Nick Aldis agreed with Cody’s idea, and the match is set for Bash in Berlin on Aug. 31.

TRIBAL CLASH

In the final segment of Smackdown, Roman Reigns took Solo Sikoa up on his challenge to take back the ceremonial necklace that symbolizes who is the “Tribal Chief” of the Samoan wrestling family.

Reigns came to the ring and beat on Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa as Solo bailed out with the necklace.

NEW CONTENDERS

LA Knight celebrated his US title win over Logan Paul before watching Andrade take on Santos Escobar to determine his first challenger.

Carmelo Hayes interfered against Andrade, continuing their feud. Escobar won the match to earn the title shot against Knight.

Also, four teams began a tournament to determine the top contenders to The Bloodline’s WWE tag team title.

The Street Profits defeated former champs Austin Theory & Grayson Waller. #DIY, which lost the belts to The Bloodline, won the other semifinal match against Pretty Deadly.

Jade Cargill defeated Alba Fyre, which led to a six-woman brawl including Bianca Belair, Naomi, Isla Dawn, and Blair Davenport.

Smackdown also included a tribute to Kevin Sullivan, the former WCW wrestler and matchmaker who passed away at the age of 74.
