Reds’ Chase Burns Breaks Paul Skenes Signing Bonus Record

There is a pretty good chance that for the rest of time, the MLB draft signing bonus record will be broken year after year. After all, that’s how money in sports works.

Last season, Paul Skenes signed with the Pirates for a record $9.2 million after Pittsburgh made him the number-one overall pick in a draft stacked with talent.

Flash forward just a year later and that signing bonus record has already been broken.

Cincinnati Reds’ number two overall pick Chase Burns signed with Los Rojos for an astounding $9.25 million on Thursday night.

After spending the previous two seasons at Tennesse, Burns transferred to Wake Forest where he would go 10-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 0.920 WHIP in exactly 100 innings pitched.

While with the Demon Deacons, Burns set the school record with 191 strikeouts while walking just 30.

During the draft process, Chase Burns was widely considered to be the most pro-ready pitcher in this year’s class.

Burns features a fastball that sits at 96-100 MPH and a wideout slider.

It would be pretty crazy to say that Chase Burns has the same stuff or will have the same instant success as Paul Skenes but the Reds are hoping that he can get on a similar trajectory.

The future of the Reds rotation could see Burns join young all-star Hunter Greene and fellow Wake Forest draftee Rhett Lowder who Cincinnati drafted with their first-round pick in last year’s draft.
