Ranking The 6 Best Fits On Nolan Arenado’s Wish List
One big name on the trading block this offseason is Nolan Arenado.
The St. Louis Cardinals are interested in moving the 10-time Gold Glove award winner and his contract this offseason. Arenado currently has a no-trade clause and would have to waive it in order to complete a deal.
According to a recent report, Arenado has targeted six teams that he would waive this for. Will any of the six teams be a fit? Let’s take a look.
6. Los Angeles Angels
The Angels land on the list because it seems Arenado would not mind returning to the West Coast. In terms of fit, this makes no sense whatsoever.
Los Angeles made some moves to fill out the roster, including Travis D’arnaud and Jorge Soler. Regardless, this is not a team that is ready to win. The Angels also still have Anthony Rendon and his contract on the books at third base. While he is never on the field, why add Arenado into the mix? The Angels would have no desire to make this trade unless they believe it can fill up the ballpark.
5. Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox have been big-game hunting all offseason. They missed out on Juan Soto but made a blockbuster deal for Garrett Crochet, giving them a legitimate ace at the top of the rotation. Arenado might be a big name but the position doesn’t make much sense. Rafael Devers remains the face of the franchise at the hot corner and bringing in Arenado, likely to be a DH, would not fit.
4. San Diego Padres
Arenado has expressed that he would be willing to move to first base in the right situation. Does that bring a little more intrigue to San Diego? Maybe but this would just be another carousel move for the franchise. The Padres have paid some superstars while letting others walk. There is a sense that the front office has one foot in and one foot out. To pay this money for an aging star, the Padres are better off waiting.
3. Los Angeles Dodgers
Let’s face it, the Dodgers are not going to make this move but it would be interesting to see. This is a team that is in on every big name available, no matter the price tag. Los Angeles has been moving players around recently. Mookie Betts has a chance to play third base, while Max Muncy is also in the mix. Arenado would want the Dodgers and he could play third there but Los Angeles is not going to jump at this.
2. New York Mets
The Mets bring an intriguing case. These two sides have been linked in the past but the Colorado Rockies ended up sending Arenado to St. Louis. Now, he could end up in Queens if the Mets do not decide to bring back Pete Alonso. Right now, Mark Vientos is slated at third base and will not be moving — unless Alonso leaves. If this happens, Vientos will likely move to first, opening up the other corner of the infield. New York has been linked to Alex Bregman but Arenado could also be on the list.
1. Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies remain the most-realistic destination. This is not to say that it will happen but it lines up perfectly. Philadelphia has done nothing this offseason and there are some impatient feelings coming out of the fanbase. The front office could add a big name to give the fans something while moving Alec Bohm, who has been in trade talks for weeks now. Would this turn the Phillies into a World Series team? There is already high hopes but the team has fallen short constantly. Arenado might not move the needle much here but the fit is a good one.
