Ranking The 5 Best Moves the New York Mets Can Make In Offseason
Juan Soto is a New York Met and Queens is rocking and rolling heading into the 2025 season.
Before the first pitch is thrown, the Mets have more holes to fill to put a championship team around Soto and Francisco Lindor. This includes free agency and trade options in the field and pitching rotation.
Below, check out the five best moves that the team could make heading into the new year.
5. Run it back with Alonso/Manaea
The Mets have two important contributors to last year’s team free right now — Pete Alonso and Sean Manaea. Alonso has been known as one of the most prolific power hitters in the game while Manaea turned into a legitimate ace last season. New York has been linked to both in free agency and that is no surprise. Alonso returning would complete the infield and Manaea would be a presence at the top of the rotation.
4. Sign Christian Walker
The Mets have a decision to make in the infield. Christian Walker should be on that short list to hop in. Walker is 33 years old and would be on a short-term deal for two or three years. Fans have an attachment to Alonso but Walker might be a better option on a shorter deal. Unlike Alonso, Walker plays Gold Glove-caliber defense at first base and strikes out less. They get on base at a similar clip and Walker will likely hit for a better average.
3. Make Trade For Alex Bregman
Whether it is at third base or second base, Alex Bregman has been linked to the Mets. Bregman claims that he is willing to move to second in the right situation and what better than joining a middle infield with Lindor? Years ago, Bregman was a big-time name. Now, he is still a Gold Glover in the infield but will be 31 years old around Opening Day. He is still asking for massive money as well. This is a move that would have been No. 1 previously but things have changed.
2. Make Trade For Luis Castillo
The Mets need starting pitching. There are four players in the rotation as of now and all four come with big question marks. The Mets need a solidified ace at the top of the rotation. The team has been linked to Luis Castillo in a trade with the Seattle Mariners. Castillo is under contract for three more years at $24 million with a vesting option for 2028. Castillo and the Mets have been linked before and no move has been made. Now is the time to do so.
1. Sign Roki Sasaki
Sasaki will likely remain unsigned until the middle of January. Right now, the 23-year-old Japanese ace is the best pitcher on the open market. He will require a small financial commitment given current standards and this means a lot of teams will be in the mix. The Mets have Kodai Senga on the roster, who made his name pitching in Japan as well. Sasaki would step to the top of the Mets rotation and give them the much-needed ace.
