Ranking QB Candidates For Washington Commanders In 2024 NFL Draft

The Washington Commanders currently have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Washington has been linked to many quarterbacks this year. The only one on the roster as of now is Marcus Mariota, who will act as a veteran backup to the rookie that is added. The Commanders sent Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks and Jacoby Brissett is now back with the New England Patriots.

It will not take long in two weeks for Washington to have its new quarterback. Below, check out the three best options for the Commanders.

3. J.J. McCarthy

J.J. McCarthy has been a late addition that many have not ruled out for Washington. The Commanders met with the Michigan Wolverine but of course, that is the right way to go about doing business. The Commanders have kept their options open and McCarthy has continued to climb up draft boards.

There is a chance that McCarthy sneaks into the top five of the draft. That is if a team decides to move up. McCarthy seems to have all of the intangibles needed to succeed at the next level. This includes experience as he was a two-year starter for Michigan. The question is, can he lead an offense?

Michigan boasted a run-first offense that was led heavily by Blake Corum and a strong offensive line. McCarthy was not asked to do much. Let’s not forget, he did not attempt a pass in the second half of a victory over Penn State this season. Washington is heading in a new direction and needs a quarterback that can make plays in different ways.

2. Drake Maye

Drake Maye certainly brings intrigue but there will be constant comparisons to Sam Howell. Both strong-armed quarterbacks, both North Carolina alum, but Maye has more size and athleticism than Howell.

Maye is considered a franchise quarterback that could have went No. 1 overall in many other drafts over the years. At North Carolina, he put up big numbers and made plays using both his arm and legs. There are many who believe he is still a bit raw and needs to develop to succeed at the NFL level.

The Commanders have Maye high on their radar and could very well opt to make him the second-overall pick in the draft. If this is the case, Maye will be given the keys to an offense with an improve offensive line and talented skill position players.

1. Jayden Daniels

Jayden Daniels might be the biggest game-changer in this draft. Yes, that includes Caleb Williams. Will history repeat itself for Washington?

This would not be the first time that the Commanders selected a Heisman winning quarterback who has been known to use his legs and has a rocket for an arm. Hopefully this time, the coaching staff would keep the quarterback safe.

Like Maye, there is no doubt that Daniels would be taken first overall in many drafts. This is a top-heavy group of quarterbacks and Daniels might be at the top. Again, that includes Williams. He is a strong-armed passer with great accuracy that can break off big runs using his legs. There is some concern that he would not be able to outrun defenders at the next level, and this is true. That is where intelligence and feel come into play.

At 6-foot-4, Daniels has the height needed for great vision. He is 210 pounds and will likely be able to put more on in the NFL.

The Commanders need a game-changer under center. Once Williams is made the top pick by the Chicago Bears, Washington should make Daniels its next quarterback.
